Historia
An Oprah's Book Club Selection regarded as one of Faulkner's greatest and most accessible novels, Light in August is a timeless and riveting story of determination, tragedy, and hope. In Faulkner's iconic Yoknapatawpha County, race, sex, and religion collide around three memorable characters searching desperately for human connection and their own identities.

I listened to Will Patton’s reading while following Faulkner’s words in print. Mr. Patton’s narration does not attempt to steal the thunder from Faulkner’s masterpiece. Rather, he delivers it with loving admiration and keen understanding of Faulkner’s craft. Every character’s voice and accent felt just right and not overdone. I truly appreciated his guidance as I drank up this remarkable book with awe and pleasure.

Historia
This compilation contains three of James Joyce's most important and recognisable works. Presented here in the order Joyce wrote them they provide an opportunity to enter his world from the comparatively shallow end of "Dubliners" to the deep end of "Ulysses". "Dubliners" contains 15 short stories in Joyce's intended sequence, each with its own moment of realisation or epiphany, ending with what is considered to be one of the finest short stories in literature, "The Dead". "Portrait" could be seen as the prelude to "Ulysses". It shows the growth of Stephen Dedalus (James Joyce) from a young child to a young man.

Amazing
Revisado: 12-15-20
At last, after several attempts over many years, I was able to finish the beautiful but difficult masterpiece Ulysses, thanks to Tadhg Hynes’ wonderful performance. Hynes’ musical cadence and unaffected accent elevated Joyce’s printed words to a level of beauty and accessibility I wouldn’t have known to hope for! (Kayleigh Payne’s reading of Molly is also fantastic.) And to think that Dubliners and A Portrait (also well read) are included in the single purchase!

Historia
Many political and cultural events sent shock waves through the Irish world in the 19th and early 20th centuries as Ireland gradually shook off the shackles of British rule. Alongside a long and painful political process arose one of the greatest flourishings of literature in modern times - a spirited discourse among those who sought to shape their nation's future, finding the significance of their bloody present intimately entwined with their legendary past.

Historia
Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

Revisado: 04-05-20
I have been trying to understand Nietzche’s writings for many years, and I have listened to many lectures about him. Never before have I walked away feeling this optimistic about the possibility of finally having some grasp of what Nietzsche’s complex philosophical system might be all about. I look forward to returning to some of Nietzsche’s writings with the tools that these passionate scholars supply in these lectures. Well worth the time.

Historia
It's difficult to imagine a nation with a history more compelling for Americans than Russia. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this was the nation against which we measured our own nation's values and power and with whom war, if it ever came, could spell unimaginable catastrophe for our planet.Yet many Americans have never had the opportunity to study Russia in depth, and to see how the forces of history came together to shape a future so different from the dreams of most ordinary Russian people, eager to see their nation embrace Western values of progress, human rights, and justice.

Author Anna Wulf attempts to overcome writer’s block by writing a comprehensive "golden notebook" that draws together the preoccupations of her life, each of which is examined in a different notebook. Anna’s struggle to unify the various strands of her life – emotional, political, and professional – amasses into a fascinating encyclopaedia of female experience in the ‘50s.

Stevenson is Unmatched
Revisado: 01-10-19
I listened to Juliet Stevenson’s reading with a copy of the book in hand. Stevenson is truly amazing. (And, btw, Lessing also deserves all the accolades she has received.) She usually demonstrates a profound understanding of the books she performs, but with this book she’s outdone even herself. Her voices for Anna/Ella, Tom, and Molly, for example, do so much more than Lessing’s words alone do to the reader’s mind—and the voices that Lessing assigned these characters are very powerful to begin with. Through Stevenson, Lessing’s characters teach, disturb, and challenge exactly the way they were designed to, only more intensely.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is one of the most important figures in the history of American thought, religion, and literature. The vitality of his writings and the unsettling power of his example continue to influence us more than a hundred years after his death. Now Robert D. Richardson Jr. brings to life an Emerson very different from the old stereotype of the passionless Sage of Concord.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

I listened to Gyllenhaal 's reading as I read the Modern Library version of the book edited by Kent and Berberova. (The editors improved the version of Constance Garnet's translation read by Gyllenhaal, but their revisions are not drastically different.) Gyllenhaal's reading enhanced my reading experience a great deal. She takes a little while getting into the groove. But certainly by Part 2 she had mastered the art. Overall she handled a very difficult project beautifully. She was the perfect choice for this masterpiece by Tolstoy.
