Historia
Lachlan Kite is a member of BOX 88, an elite transatlantic black-ops outfit so covert that not even MI6 and the CIA are certain of its existence - but even the best spy can't anticipate every potential threat in a world where dangerous actors lurk around every corner. At the funeral of his childhood best friend, Lachlan falls into a trap that drops him into the hands of a potentially deadly interrogation, with his pregnant wife, also abducted, being held as collateral for the information he's sworn on his own life to protect.

Fascinating spy tale
Revisado: 04-06-25
The idea of a secret British and America spy agency may seem unlikely in these fractious times, but if you can suspend you imagination, this is an absorbing tale.

Historia
The campaign of destruction that Axel Soledad and Dallas Cates wreaked on Nate Romanowski and Joe Pickett left both men in tatters, especially Nate, who lost almost everything. Wondering if the civilized life left him vulnerable to attack, Nate dropped off the grid with his falcons in tow to prepare for vengeance. When Joe gets a call from the governor asking for help finding his son-in-law, who has gone missing in the Sierra Madre mountain range, he enlists the help of a local, a rookie game warden named Susan Kany.

Good for those who are antigovernment
Revisado: 03-15-25
I hadn’t realized that CJ Box was so strongly set against the feds. We all have our criticisms and things we’d like improved, but this story is full of characters who are pretty close to believing there’s nothing good about our national government. I know that isn’t true because I know a bunch of government workers who work hard because they believe they’re serving the American people. I think those who believe otherwise will pretty shortly find out that they miss some things that are currently being destroyed about our government. We’ll see.

Historia
New York, 1997. As the city’s gritty edges are being smoothed into something safer and shinier, two girls meet at a music magazine. Rose—brash and self-possessed—is a staff writer. Charlotte—hesitant, bookish—is an editor. First wary, then slowly admiring, they recognize in each other an insatiable and previously unmatched ambition. Soon they’re inseparable, falling into the kind of friendship that makes you better, makes every day an adventure, and makes you believe that you will be extraordinary.

Exhilarating and bittersweet
Revisado: 01-30-25
Carlene Bauer writes about an extraordinary friendship and women trying to find their way in a world that offers them less than they want and more than they know how to handle. Hilarious and wry.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Gamache in danger
Revisado: 12-08-24
Louise Penny’s Gamache series is always entertaining and this is a good if not great addition to the lineup. Maybe the action was too scattered amongst Armand’s trusted colleagues or maybe I missed spending time in Three Pines. Whatever the lack, it was still a good listen, and I’m getting used to the new narrator, who is talented but doesn’t quite have the warmth—or even the strong accent— of the first.

Historia
Detective Constable Angus MacVicar has just landed his dream job – transferred out of uniform and assigned to Oldcastle’s biggest ongoing murder investigation: Operation Telegram, hunting the “Fortnight Killer”. Every two weeks another couple is targeted. One victim is left at the scene, their corpse used as a twisted message board. The second body is never seen again. This should be the perfect chance for Angus to prove himself, but instead of working on the investigation’s front line, he’s lumbered with the forensic psychologist from hell.

Not sure I will finish this one
Revisado: 10-24-24
I had forgotten how much MacBride depends on his main character grousing, or I should say "whinging," which I think the Scots use as well as the Brits. MacBride's series protagonist Logan McRae is pretty much one big complaint, and Angus MacVicar, his new guy in this novel, is the same. Some readers or listeners might find humor in his endless bad luck, bad weather, mistreatment from colleagues, and gripes about the same, but reading this is no pleasure for me. Maybe I'll hold out long enough to see how moaning MacVicar and the annoying American profiler solve the case. Maybe not.

Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Tense atmosphere
Revisado: 08-16-24
The narrator has a great voice for this dark and gritty story. He’s maybe a little more melodramatic than suits my taste, but Cosby has penned a gripping narrative about a grim feature of our republic that still remains. Maybe the heightened tone fits.

Revisado: 04-28-24
I appreciated the developing relationship between Cal and Tre and the support they both get from Fiona?? Cal’s girlfriend. I don’t remember names as well when I hear them as I do when I see them on the page. Good story with suspense and lots of heart.

Excellent suspense when a mother sends her daughter on the run

This is an absorbing story, but I have to say I enjoyed the daughter’s flight across the country more than the story of her mother’s radical past.
