Historia
When he retired as the chief security officer of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, John Barelli had spent the better part of 40 years responsible not only for one of the richest treasure troves on the planet, but the museum's staff, the millions of visitors, as well as American presidents, royalty, and heads of state from around the world. For the first time, John Barelli shares his experiences of the crimes that occurred on his watch, the investigations that captured thieves and recovered artwork....

Fascinating
Revisado: 06-07-21
A fascinating look behind the scenes of a great museum where the author was head of security for many years. There were a few dry sections, and sometimes the author's ego is on display, but his background, training and experience is riveting. Art theft is always interesting and Barelli analyzes the motivations behind it. His encounters with world leaders were interesting too.

Historia
All the beloved, irascible Auntie Poldi wanted from her Sicilian retirement was time to enjoy the sunshine, a free-flowing supply of wine, and a sultry romance with Chief Inspector Vito Montana. But then her idyll is rudely disrupted by the last person she wants to see on her doorstep: John Owenya, detective inspector with the Tanzanian Ministry of Home Affairs, who is also her estranged lying cheat of a husband. Not only is John's sudden reappearance putting a kink in Poldi's dreamy love affair with Montana, but his presence also comes with a plea for help.

Best Poldi yet
Revisado: 09-25-20
The Poldi books are wacky but engaging. Part Sicily travelogue, part fairy tale, and a little self indulgent meandering by the author, they have humor, some suspense and colorful characters. I haven't been to Sicily, but the locations in Sicily seem to be real and the listening experience can be enhanced by looking at photos in Google Maps. This narrator is fantastic. He does each character to perfection and his Italian is superb.

Worth a listen
Revisado: 06-07-19
I thought I would never get to the end of this, but it was worth listening to. The narrator in this version was absolutely outstanding and I highly recommend her. I'm sure I read Thackeray in high school and may or may not have finished, but this was an easier way to get through the torrent of words. Those Victorians got paid by the word, didn't they? I had to take this in small doses but I'm glad I persevered. The author becomes one of the characters and we come to know him pretty well.

Should be fascinating
Revisado: 06-07-19
I'm disappointed in this one and will return it. It's an absolutely riveting story but gets bogged down in the details over and over. Author is giving us so much source material --letters, etc.--that the narrative disappears. I also found the narration frustrating. Too many accents and none particularly well done--southern US, French, British, German and more. Although I'm sure the narrator did his best, this book needs someone with flawless French. I hope to read this one in print.

This held my interest and was better than I expected. Lucy Price-Lewis is such a good narrator that I forgot I was listening. She handled multiple accents, and both men and women with great skill.
The story moved right along and although predictable, had interesting characters and great atmosphere and local color.

Historia
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

What did you love best about Northanger Abbey?
This was a very well done abridgment. Even though parts of the book were left out, I didn't feel that I was missing anything important.
Any additional comments?
The voices were excellent and it was usually easy to tell who was speaking. A lovely story brought to life.

Thank you Zara Ramm!
Revisado: 11-03-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Words can't describe how much I love this series. This sixth volume has many very funny moments and makes a good review of St. Mary's, since Max is now training a group of aspiring historians.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters by now seem so real to me as they follow the twists and turns of the plot. The addition of new characters is welcome. Taylor strikes a great balance between the familiar and new elements in the story.
What about Zara Ramm’s performance did you like?
I haven't read these books in print, but I can't imagine them without Zara Ramm's voice as Max. She should receive every audio reader award out there for her masterful renditions of this series. She gets completely into the mind and heart of the author.
