Historia
In The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky explores human nature at its most loathsome and cruel but never flinches at what he finds. The novel tells the stirring tale of four brothers: the pleasure-seeking, impatient Dmitri; the brilliant and morose Ivan; the gentle, loving, and honest Alyosha; and the illegitimate Smerdyakov, shy, silent, and cruel. They are behind the murder of one of literature's most despicable characters: their father. This was Dostoevsky's final and perhaps his finest work.

One of the best books ever written
Revisado: 01-08-05
This is probably my favorite book of all time. Most fiction describes appearances, dialog, and "cookie-cutter" emotions (even Crime and Punishment fits this description), but in this book Dostoyevsky has somehow found a way to decribe the mental process in action. I read it in awe of his insight. While the setting is 19th Century Russia, he is way ahead of his time and may be way ahead of our own in the sheer depth of his understanding and his ability to portray. He is quoted for this ability in Steven Pinker's most recent book "Blank Slate" (another author that needs to be recorded). And the dialog is great theology and philosophy. The abridged version chose to focus on the action-oriented Dmitri and does not even include the Grand Inquisitor conversation!

A hard-hitting and no-holds-barred broadside, from the anchorman of the Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor - what's good about America (plenty), what's bad (plenty still), and what's completely ridiculous (most everything else).

Propaganda here?
Revisado: 12-25-02
A very important point is made in this book -- that our destiny as a nation is as much affected by the deceit of its leaders as by the character of its people. This book lays out in convincing detail, how we can be led into war, or anything else for that matter. The book makes no judgment on whether the nation's isolationist mood would have been good or bad (obviously it would have been disastrous for the world if the Axis had pursued its goals without American intervention). However, the weakness of representative democracy as a means of expression of the "will of the people" is a real eye-opener.
