Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Extraordinary Auto Bio!
Revisado: 11-13-24
I don't remember when I've enjoyed an autobiography more. It's as candid as a celebrity bio can be, as well as funny and witty. I loved the stories of Pacino's boyhood in the South Bronx. His narration really brought the neighborhood to life to those of us unfamiliar with NY culture. I'm so glad I listened to the audio version, because the highs and lows of his voice, the chuckling and the self-deprecation made it so lively. As a listener, you really feel like you are sitting with him one-on-one. I appreciated the description of his money woes; kind of a cautionary tale for all, whether you have $100 or $100 million. Highly recommend!

Historia
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

An Achingly Authentic Human Story
Revisado: 10-21-24
I had no idea what Lisa Marie Presley went through in the years following her father's death. Riley Keough tells her mother's story with poignancy and grace, while still detailing the acute details of her mother's struggle. This book says so much about Lisa Marie's continuing battle with confusion, grief, love, addiction and the celebrity culture surrounding her at birth. I view this memoir as a cautionary tale to not judge others' harshly; particularly actors, musicians, writers and icons we have put on pedestals; real flesh and blood people, of whom we know really nothing. The loveliest thing this book left me with was that Lisa Marie Presley was a wonderful mother and loved her family more than anything. That is a lot. That is everything.

Couldn't Stop Listening!
Revisado: 09-05-24
As a fan of any kind of Hollywood history, this was the memoir I'd been waiting for. Funny at times, heartbreaking at others, this paints an unabashed portrait of a personal family history, warts and all. I've long followed the writings of father Dominick Dunne in Vanity Fair, and always wished to learn more about the circumstances of sister Dominique's tragic murder. It's all here. I sincerely hope Griffin Dunne will follow up with a second book. The only glaring error I heard, and the fact-checkers should have caught this, was Dunne's reference to the film Suddenly Last Summer, where he describes Montgomery Clift's character as having been devoured by street urchins. It was actually an actor named Julian Ugarte who played the victim of cannibalism. Other than that bit of trivia, this book was right on target, and I highly recommend.

The Book I've Been Waiting For
Revisado: 07-05-24
The early 60s is my favorite decade because the cast of characters in those years was unequaled. Ellroy skillfully interlaced history, conjecture, favorite names and the unbridled LAPD of the era, as only he can do. If this time period is of interest, it's definitely worth listening to. With that being said, I think it could have been a shorter book, as I found a lot of repetition starting to mount about 3/4 through, and I began to lose a little interest. I stayed with it, though, and glad I did, because the glossary of characters and terms at the end was helpful. The narrator, Craig Wasson, was absolutely amazing! I still remember him from the haunting film Body Double. His ability with accents is a joy to listen to.

One of the best autobiographies I have ever listened to. Historically, Lucy gets most of the credit for their enormous success, but Desi was the wheel behind the scenes who helped this couple build such an influential entertainment empire. He may not have been the best husband, but he wins AA+ for his business acumen and his ability to produce, make great deals, and secure his legacy as a significant force in what would shape the future in media. Desi was a brilliant, underrated artist and I am so glad to have heard his remarkable story.

Historia
No celebrity rivals Elizabeth Taylor’s glamour and guts or her level of fame. She was the last major star to come out of the old Hollywood studio system and she is a legend known for her beauty and her magnetic screen presence in a career that spanned most of the twentieth century and nearly sixty films. But her private life was even more compelling than her Oscar-winning on-screen performances. During her seventy-nine years of rapid-fire love and loss she was married eight times to seven different men.

For Taylor Fans, Don't Miss This!
Revisado: 01-09-23
At first, I thought this was going to be a rehash of her 1964 memoir, which I bought as a child. It was during the Cleopatra period that I fell in love with her and Richard Burton. Much of that information was included, but this book is so much more. With the input of Elizabeth's children and other private sources, this book revealed a woman who was fearless and completely redeemed herself on multiple levels. Her relentless pursuit of justice in the fight against AIDS is just one example. Her lifetime loyalty to her friends was so lovely. Eleanor Caudill as narrator, captured well Taylor's lilting, sing-song tone beautifully! ET made her amends through the years and her humanity is so apparent. This was a life well lived, even through and beyond the toxicity of her early Hollywood years. I highly recommend this book, which brings you closer to the real woman as she constantly reinvented herself as a survivor from past experiences. If you thought, as I did, that you knew everything about her, this book is a wonderful gift of new insight on a truly remarkable lady.

Definitely Worth a Listen....
Revisado: 01-01-23
Many comments have disparaged Jennifer Jason Leigh's narration. Yes, there is a bit of vocal fry in her voice, but not enough to distract from the content, in fact, I didn't notice it after a few minutes. I actually liked the accents and inflections she was able to deliver. She is a terrific actor, I loved both the movie and this book adaptation. Tarantino certainly captures the late 60s ambience and since I was a teen during this period and living in SoCal, I remember the time period only too well. You can practically taste the dust in your mouth from Spahn Ranch, it's so accurately represented.

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.
