Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

A great listen
Revisado: 12-13-22
I really enjoy the character of Gideon. She keeps things fast paced and finds ways to bring humor to everything even as the story becomes 'And Then There Were None'.
The worldbuilding is immensely interesting using the fantasy and Sci Fi elements together fluidly without ever feeling overbearing or requiring an expository lecture to understand.
All the characters are really well done as well. Gideon is my favorite, and I love Palamedes (possibly misspelled because audiobook sorry) dearly.

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

Great story
Revisado: 12-08-22
Wow I really enjoyed this. The story is captivating. I especially enjoyed the aromantic and Jewish pirates of the face-having young woman's crew and how those elements impacted the characters. The book works with night Vale worldbuilding in a really unique way, different from the other Night Vale novels. All of the strange countries Cecil visited in his Europe trip have their own stories histories to say the least.

Historia
When Diya Burman's best friend, Angie, dies unexpectedly, it feels like her own life is falling apart. Grief costs her friends, family and even her job. But that's ok, because now she's got a new job: working at Slough & Sons, a family firm that deals in cleaning up after the recently deceased. Old love letters. Porcelain dolls. Hoarded trinkets. Clearing away the remnants of other people's lives, Diya begins to see things. Horrible things. Things that get harder and harder to write off as merely her grieving imagination.

Interesting story
Revisado: 11-26-22
The premise here is so interesting, and I really like how it goes about creating the settings (all the different homes they clean and the people they once housed shown through possessions and order). The choice to have Jonny Sims play one character in contrast to Rachel Petladwala's performance as the rest is SUCH an excellent way to set him apart as unnerving and concerning before we even know why. This book is also one of the only ones (maybe only the second) to include a queerplatonic relationship which runs central to the story though it is past, which makes me very happy to see as an aromantic person.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

A great read with a great concept

I really enjoyed listening to this! The format and narrative device with Screwtape and Wormwood was a delight. It had a delightfully (and perhaps surprisingly) nuanced take on all the moral musings.

Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy? A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

Great story, engages with genre
Revisado: 09-28-22
I really enjoyed this. I could stop listening since I started it! The main character is an interesting character who grows and changes (in both good and bad ways) throughout the book. I like how it focused in on injury and disability as an essential part to how the book engages with the superhero genre. I like the corruption arc of the main character. I like that it is very queer but doesn't center romantic relationships. The platonic and ambiguous relationships play such a big role, and I love that.

A good horror story
Revisado: 09-23-22
It was a very good horror story, but I didn't realize it was a horror story until the end. In retrospect, it's obvious and works very well as such. But in the moment, it felt more like a thriller / Sci fi drama. It's good horror, but the consequence is the sense that this wonderfully developed character could never really develop, never really grow, would inevitably never change from the worst version of herself. Which. Um. Not thrilled about that. She developers so much over the course of the book and ends up back in the same place, having changed so much and not at all. A little jarring. It's a good horror, but I should not have only realized it was a horror story at the end.
Interesting worldbuilding and characters. Great performance from Xe Sands.

Loved it
Revisado: 09-18-22
Ahhh I have to wait for the next book now!! I adore the relationship, care between, and dynamic of Isabel and the ghost. The platonic relationships in this book make me so happy. I also love the exploration of After. It's not just a fight at the end of last book and then a happily ever after; it's years of work and change and development after, beautifully written.

She will go with him on his underworld hunt for the long-lost ghost of his partner, and in exchange she will find out more about his pre-apocalyptic world than any Archivist before her. Great characters and dynamics
Revisado: 09-13-22
I came to Nicole Kornher-Stace's writing through their discussions of platonic relationships on Twitter, and I really like what's shown here with the deeply developed relationship between the ghost and Foster and the newly developing one between Wasp and the ghost. A little disappointed to see that the next book doesn't have the same narrator!

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Hand in unlovable hand
Revisado: 09-07-22
This book answers the question "Are the straights ok?". Spoiler: They are not.
A very interesting mix of perspectives and a page turner once you get far enough in. I hated Amy for a long time, but once you get through a little over half the book, she gets pretty damn interesting. It's a good book to make you yell, "Dude, RUN!" and "Oh they weren't kidding when they said she's unhinged."
I have described Nick and Amy as the epitome of 'hand in unlovable hand' and 'perfect for each other (derogatory)'.

I quite enjoyed the book! The narrator is great and fits perfectly within the noir vibe. The story is interesting, and the world is compelling. I felt the ending dropped the ball a bit.
