Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Remarkable and worth the effort.
Revisado: 06-19-19
This is simply a remarkable book. Brilliant and completely original. Unfortunately it has received mixed reviews from readers because of its unusual style and structure. But once you understand the style and the context the story is very compelling. And yes , contrary to what the negative readers have claimed, there is a story here. The basic plot line is an 18 year old girl is stalked by a 40’s something paramilitary man in Belfast in the ‘70s in the middle of the troubles. This is an interior novel and what makes this book so unusual is that the whole plot line is revealed by the interior monologue of the 18 year old girl “middle sister”. The characters have only generic names like “wee sister 1”, “sister 3”, “maybe boyfriend” because they are in one sense symbolic figures trying to survive in fractured, often absurd ways, in the extremely dangerous and unpredictable world of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The state of Northern Ireland is a part of Great Britain, supported by its Protestant residents. But the significant Catholic minority, “the renouncers”, the “rebels”, have formed an underground resistance movement and terrorize their own Catholic constituency as well as their enemy Protestant neighbors. Our heroine, Middle Sister, is part of the Catholic community both sympathetic to and terrorized by the renouncers who act in ways very similar to modern ISIS. We stay with Middle Sister as she leads us among the social and political land mines in her tribal, closed minded community. Middle Sister is both a complicated and perceptive and verbal character, alternatively wise, ironic, hilarious and sad, both brave and passive as she explains her life and times to us. She and the people around her are very sympathetic and heartbreakingly human even if they are bigoted and downright stupid at times. Once you adjust to her internal monologue, you are in for an incredible ride and education.

Extraordinary book!
Revisado: 04-19-19
This is simply an extraordinary book - a wild gothic tale full of mystery and atmosphere, beautifully written in lyrical, often poetic prose. Ingeniously structured with a mesmerizing story and wonderful, complex characters. I heard the beautifully narrated audio book and it completely transported me.

There's no police training stronger than a cop's instinct. Faith Mitchell's mother isn't answering her phone. Her front door is open. There's a bloodstain above the knob. Her infant daughter is hidden in a shed behind the house. All that the Georgia Bureau of Investigations taught Faith Mitchell goes out the window when she charges into her mother's house, gun drawn. She sees a man dead in the laundry room. She sees a hostage situation in the bedroom. What she doesn't see is her mother.

Badly written with ridiculous gratuitous violence
Revisado: 10-18-17
Hard to know what is the the weakest point of this book . The weak, implausible plot? The embarrassing clicheed dialogue? The disgusting gratuitous violence meant to make a weak novel "gritty" and "real". I got through the audiobook because I paid for it but it was bad.

Grim, miserable tale
Revisado: 08-11-17
A grim take of torture, homosexual rape and murder at a posh English boarding school. There are no redeeming characteristics here. Narration in this 2 hour audiobook was rushed and difficult to understand. I have enjoyed other books by Elizabeth George but not this one. I cannot recommend.

Historia
In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive.

Trite, formulaic. story with overwrought narration
Revisado: 07-24-17
Despite the trendy World War I and II context, this novel lacks true historical detail and perspective. The story about women spies in World War I is predictable and yet unbelievably violent with gruesome detailed torture scenes . The dialogue is full of cliches as the oh so feisty American heroine Charly defies her traditional family to find her beloved cousin who disappeared in the second World War. "The blue Lagonda (Bentley) purred like a kitten and drove like a dream". The breathy, excitable narration compounded the writing flaws. I finished the audio book only because I had paid for it and had nothing else to listen to on a road trip.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

I have read all of Tana French's books and although I loved all of them , I think this is her best. The plot is full of surprises and the dialog in the interviews is frequently astonishing. Taut psychological drama. Audio book was wonderful with a great narrator .

Historia
Joshua Johannssen has spent all of his 31 years among sailboats. His grandfather designed them, his father built and raced them, his mother knows why and how they work (or not). For Josh and his two siblings, their backyard was the Puget Sound and sailing their DNA. But both his sister and brother fled many years ago: Ruby to Africa and elsewhere to do good works on land, and Bernard to god-knows-where at sea, a fugitive and pirate.
