Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Beautiful story and narration
Revisado: 09-25-24
A great book! Just not what I was looking for as a cozy mystery. A little too real and not enough escapism. But this is not necessarily a fault! It’s so well written and the narrater was phenomenal.

Historia
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Fast paced and fun listen
Revisado: 06-15-23
I enjoyed the nonstop action, the exciting battle scenes and the classic monster descriptions. I like the characters a lot and personally wouldn’t mind a little more character development, but hoping now that he’s got me hooked with the action we’ll maybe get more of that in the next books? There were a few character names that were confusingly similar in my opinion. It made it difficult to learn and differentiate between them, but that could just be me.
I loved that there were no long war strategy scenes. I swear some authors wish they had been generals and I find those books tedious and hard to get through. None of that here. Just lots of fun!
I agree with both sides of the argument on the narrator. He does have the perfect voice for this type of novel, but yes, he only has one voice. A few times I had to go back and re-listen to a conversation to figure out who was saying what. But overall I really enjoy his narration. No distracting or annoying habits that take your attention away from the story. I give him a thumbs up if I have to go one way or another.

I really dislike the music but the story is so good it’s worth it anyway. The narrators are okay… awful with accents and dialects but with nice voices overall.

Extraordinary Storytelling
Revisado: 10-19-21
I never write reviews, but I had to for this book.
I don’t want to give away too much, but there are two very specific pieces of music that play primary roles in this story. I’m intimately familiar with one (being a professional musician myself) and I listed to the other (the piano solo) several times while listening to this book. Kate Noble did such a remarkable job intertwining these pieces into the story. It’s by far the most poignant use of musical themes in any book I’ve ever read. I’m beyond impressed. She clearly did her homework and it paid off. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was so moved by any story. I expected a lighthearted escape and found myself absolutely transported. I couldn’t put it down.
All the other books in this series are well worth a listen. I do recommend them, but this book is being added to my (short) “Repeat” list in my library.

These books are well written and so much fun to listen to. I enjoy the eccentric characters and witty plot. The author shares just enough hints to have you guessing, but I never quite figure it out until everything is revealed. Looking forward to the rest.

Best book I’ve read in years
Revisado: 05-30-20
I don’t often write reviews but this book stands out in so many ways. I’m usually bored with history and tactics but even those parts were engaging. Something about this book kept me enraptured from start to finish. I can’t recommend it enough.
