Most of us grew up influenced by the propaganda of the “lost cause”. This book is the story of one person learning the truth and trying to make things right. His military background and Ph.D in history give the author the credibility to address white supremacy as few others can.

A book for all Americans

This book is a fair and meticulous look at the relationship of religion to the founding of our nation and creation of the Constitution. Created as a secular Nation respectful of religious differences, we are currently in a battle to uphold the values of the Constitution as zealots try to impose their religion on others and corrupt American values. Every thoughtful American should read this book and reflect on their responsibilities as Americans and lovers of justice and freedom.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is informative and well written. Though I have read or listened to many books about the Civil War, I still learned a great deal from this one.

The book is okay. It's a little over the top in praise of Steve Jobs. I think it would have been much more interesting and helpful had the author been a bit more realistic about Mr. Jobs weaknesses.

Another great McCullough book

Entertaining and informative, this book is a delight. I enjoyed learning about Paris as much as I did learning about the American's who lived and learned there.

What is "good"

The authors provide a somewhat interesting analysis of non-profit organizations, but the work is fundamentally flawed by the assumption that these organizations are doing good. Generating a lot of revenue and even influencing policy does not equate to doing "good". I'm reminded of the missionaries who went to Hawaii in the 19th century to "do good" and ended up doing "very well"--for themselves. Or think of well intentioned people who tried to "help" Native Americans in the 19th and early 20th century. In my opinion some of the non-profits cited in this book have indeed been forces for good. But that's my opinion. I also strongly believe that two of them, the Heritage Foundation and Teach for America, have done well but are doing damage to our society. The Heritage Foundation is a propaganda machine that has certainly been influential, but not necessarily good for society. Teach for America has attracted a lot of funding because it matches the political agendas of some wealthy foundations and individuals, but any objective review of the organization can only lead one to conclude that it does more harm than good to the teaching profession and to children.
