You know that sensation where the show is super quiet and then it switches to commercial at comically loud jump scare level noise? This is that in book form. Some characters whisper while other yell at the tops of their lungs, horrible to listen to, impossible to equalize? How did it get released like this?

In a word? Cringe.

From the purposeful word choice, to the overarching story and tone, I am more disgusted than disturbed and the entirely wrong type of horrified. Ending with one of the weakest "twists" I have heard, this cringe-fest of poor decisions is little more than a glorification of terrible acts and actions.
On a performance note, its entirely pointless to have a male narrator for 30 seconds that adds nothing.

What the actual?

Having never read or listened to a Paul Trembley novel before I gave this one a chance based on his acclaim and my love for horror movies. What I received was a convoluted, pretentious, and referential cacophonic blend of nothing. The performace, in attempt to sound like a table reading, includes restarts, sneezes, wheezes, and other pointless noises that make parts of this annoying and seemingly glitched. The story is poor and is too long for what little it actually has to say, let alone the convoluted way it has to say it.

Promises and somewhat delivers

Episodes range from interesting and insightful to droll dribble, and some parts feel preachy and over performative. Wouldve enjoyed and listened to more but there are better out there when this should be a knock out with who its by.

Not at all bad, but probably my least favorite

While I am a fan of the writers puns and humor, the joke execution in this one seemed off.

A few out of nowhere plot points disconnected me a little and this one kinda feels like the writer is sacrificing the world and everyone else to develop Joe more but he's not actually changing.

Still a great series, read, and listen that keeps me interested.

Please sir, may I have some more?

Where be Vikas?

Great story bogged down and nearly ruined by a shift in narrator. Nothing against Luke Daniels but everyone feels like a different character, if it was because it's Jaxons story and everyone hears differently thats a neat touch. However, I'm really hoping it goes back in the main series so it isn't as jarring as this was.

stories are fine to good to great
problem is it sounds like youre listening through a tin can and some string.
spend your money better and get some tin can and a string and tell your friend a ghost story.

Dont waste your money

I love short story collections but this one was bad. The stories themselves range from decently capturing to nails on the chalkboard of your head boring and pointless but sadly most stay to the boring. The narrators voice is ill suited and his "old man" voice he uses for every character gets old, man, real quick.
Theres plenty of other collections on here besides this one, go listen to them.
