Very well handled discussion of a difficult topic

I’m just so impressed with this series! It makes you deeply understand the trauma that victims and their families experience when a serial killer strikes. I was also very happy to see the victims placed front and centre. And how coercive control prevented a witness from coming forward for so long. Strongly strongly recommended!

Historia
In 1994, an aspiring young cold-case investigator in California’s East Bay, Paul Holes, puts aside trying to solve the Golden State Killer case as he waits for science to catch up. Paul returns to an old file cabinet at the back of the forensic lab to look for another cold case he can work—something with DNA. He finds one. The 1978 murder of a married mother who went for a morning jog in a nearby park. The original investigators believed that a serial killer named Phillip Hughes was responsible; they just couldn’t prove it.

Listened just before shutdown, made me happy
Revisado: 05-21-20
This was really wonderful, and although it's kind of an infomercial for the Red Rooster, it made me very happy and eager to visit Harlem again. Sadly I listened just before the shutdown happened here, and it felt like I had my future trip ripped from underneath me.
Very enjoyable.

Historia
The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life.

A hot mess
Revisado: 10-26-19
At the beginning, I really liked this book. I enjoyed the lead character, and sympathised with her history and life. I also liked the way that the podcast was so seamlessly integrated into the story.
But when the travelling begins, I just couldn't get over the omissions and illogical events. The author, IMO, is trying to push too many hot button issues at one time, and they just get lost in a massive tumble against each other.
So promising, but ultimately totally disappointing.

Next, a young woman's imaginary boyfriend goes missing. And, in the final investigation, Varg must determine whether nocturnal visitations at a local spa have a supernatural element.

Too derivative

Seems like Alexander McCall Smith is recycling his ideas, just in a new setting. Quirky dog - check. Quirky car - check. Quirky detective - check. Really pretty forgettable.

Moving and poignant. A must-listen
Revisado: 03-09-19
Complete. Just completely satisfying, Completely moving, completely perfect in every way. It's not often that I am compelled to rock back and forth, chanting "no, no no, please" while listening to a book. I came to care about the characters so much that I felt true grief. The Great Believers delivers so many deep insights, so much wonderful character development, so much poignancy. One of the best listens I've had for many years.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

I'm very familiar with this story, having read the Michelle McNamara book, "I'll Be Gone In The Dark", and listened to several podcasts on this topic. This is a top-notch summary of the case, and the latest developments, very professionally done. Gives a lot of new insights, and the interviews with the victims are just so moving. Wonderful job, all around.

Historia
Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge.

Really really good. Gives an insight into a life that is so different from my own - but with so many similarities. I wish the author all the best in her future life, and I think she is one of the strongest people I have ever "met" through literature. Recommended.

What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 03-09-19
I liked this one. The characters are well drawn, and the voices are good. It's a bit confusing at the beginning - one gets the feeling that you are already supposed to know the characters and distinguish them by voices alone. The ending is a bit weak. Would listen to more of this author.

Historia
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Amateur effort - maybe better the next time?
Revisado: 03-09-19
So, this did draw me in. However, I found it very depressing to listen to - I had to take regular breaks. And I had guessed many of the "plot twists" before they happened. Actually -- all of the plot twists...
The imagery and setting are strengths of this book. The atmosphere is well described. I did finish it, but I hope that the promise this new author shows is realised in future work.
