Historia
In this short book illuminated by a deep understanding and love of humanity, John Steinbeck retells an old Mexican folk tale: the story of the great pearl, how it was found, and how it was lost. For the diver Kino, finding a magnificent pearl means the promise of a better life for his impoverished family. His dream blinds him to the greed and suspicions the pearl arouses in him and his neighbors, and even his loving wife cannot temper his obsession or stem the events leading to the tragedy. For Steinbeck, Kino and his wife illustrate the fall from innocence of people who believe that wealth erases all problems.

Amazing
Revisado: 04-07-22
I'm surprised I wasn't assigned this novella in middle or high school. It's incredible. Emotional, tense, tragic, it's a beautifully written book about often ugly people.
Hector Elizando's performance is perfect. I have always been a fan of his acting work and now am one of his narration work, too!

Historia
Philip Horkman is a happy man - the owner of a pet store called The Wine Shop, and on Sundays a referee for kids' soccer. Jeffrey Peckerman is the sole sane person in a world filled with goddamned jerks and morons, and he's having a really bad day. The two of them are about to collide in a swiftly escalating series of events that will send them running for their lives, pursued by the police, soldiers, terrorists, subversives, bears, and a man dressed as Chuck E. Cheese.

Listener Discretion Advised
Revisado: 04-04-22
The characters in this story are vile. One more than the other, but both are despicable. To enjoy this book, you must be able to handle comedy about awful people speaking and behaving terribly in absurd situations. There is offensive dialog about every type of person, a few instances of inadvertent animal cruelty, more than a little literal bathroom humor, and a large dose of political humor that might be too much for some (though keep in mind that this book was published in 2012).
If you can handle all that, this is one funny book. The plot is completely ridiculous. The way the authors turn a phrase creates many comedic surprises. The interplay between the two authors' contributions, at times seeing the same part of the story from two or more perspectives, adds to the humor. This is, of course, enhanced by the tag-team nature of the audio performance.
This book is the cousin of properties such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Men Behaving Badly, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. If you enjoy that style of comedy, you will likely get some enjoyment from Lunatics.

Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance.

Fun Story, Even Better Performance
Revisado: 03-01-22
This tale of obsessed fandom has a lot of interesting twists and turns and more than a few red herrings. It's alternately enlightening, crass, emotional, and comical. The performance and production of the audiobook adds to the fun. While I usually prefer audiobooks to be a straight reading with no extra production, this was a welcome exception. Having the cast of characters largely portraying fictionalized(?) versions of themselves added to the entertainment as did the subtle, sporadic uses of music and sound effects. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a fun mystery/thriller, but if you're a Star Trek fan, this is a must read/listen.

Perhaps all of Jonathan Ames' problems, and the genesis of this hilarious audiobook, can be traced back to the late onset of his puberty. After all, it can't be easy to be 16 with a hairless penis "undistinguishable from that of a five-year-old's".

This book was not for me. Taken individually, some of these articles might have been interesting. Collected like this, though, they're repetitive and boring, the rare chuckles oases of entertainment in a desert of dullness. Also, perhaps some of this material was edgy when the stories were first published, but now they're bland. It's tepidness even appears in the subtitle, "Mildly Perverted." Who wants to waste eight and a half hours on mildness?
Certainly not the author, because his read sounds like he's not even interested in his own work. He takes the pan out of deadpan.
You might consider buying the print book and reading it in small portions over a long time, but I cannot recommend this audio version.
