Good book but annoying male narrator

The voice of the female lead is strong and really emotionally deep, especially around the complexities of being the child of Chinese immigrants and surfing the divide of a sibling. The prose is beautiful, although there were a few storytelling gimmicks I could have done without. The male lead is also compelling, but his character is less believable, consistent, and realistic (more like the vague perfect guy women want than an actual flesh and blood specific guy). The female narrator does a beautiful job and has a simple, pure narrating style.

The biggest flaw is the male narrator who I just can’t stand. I’ve heard him in other audio books, and he has this overly affective delivery that makes the male lead sound like a surfer bro, or a cheesy porn star, and the female lines sound really winey. He sounds like he’s trying too hard to use a voice he thinks women will find sexy (I don’t!!) rather than a true, honest delivery. I’ve never liked his performances, but in this book it was especially distracting and dissident because of the tone and emotional content of the story and the likable, intelligent, vulnerable qualities of the character he’s portraying (I.e. the opposite of a surfer bro). I really wish Audible would stop using this narrator, or that he would work on using a more natural voice and delivery.

This book was cliché and not well developed. Not worth the time listening to it.

Loved it start to finish. Great dialog and characters, great plot, set in interesting places and giving a glimpse into a world I didn't know much about (audio book narration). All that made it a captivating and entertaining read, but what was truly remarkable is how it managed to explore universal psychological themes in an emotionally wrenching and unique way, and also how it managed to make tropes and clichés really fun and wink, wink in an non-cheesy way. That's where the author being the performer, and such a gifted one, really sold the story.

It was a cute concept but poorly written. At one point the writing was so mundane, it described the character going to the bathroom, doing his business, brushing his teeth, putting his deodorant on, and plugging in his cell phone. That's how boring and pointless most of the plot was. Other parts were cheesie and cringey. I love a light-hearted romantic comedy, so wanted to like this story, but unfortunately this was just a silly snooze fest.

I really enjoyed listening to all 3 of Lily Chu's audio books. This one is my favorite. Ms. Chu has such a cool and unique cultural perspective, moving between Canada and Korean in this book, as well as Chinese-Candian perspectives in all 3. I love the details about fun snacks and drinks, clothes and beauty products, and locations. I also love the strong female relationships between friends, sisters, mothers/daughters and the hilarious banter it often brings. Phillipa Soo delivers those humorous moments perfectly and really makes them sing. I love Chu's characters' vulnerability and the message of living authentically and following your passion which is in all 3 of her works. Great work, and I hope Lily Chu and Phillipa Soo will keep up their fabulous duo to produce more works soon!

The Evelyn Hugo character was interesting and well-developed, but the main protagonist was dull and underdeveloped. The plot started strong but got too repetitive after a while, like the author ran out of steam halfway through. Too much exposition made it drag out. The author could have used the creative writing 101 advice to, "show, don't tell." Overall, pretty good but not great.

This book is really helpful! Many of the parenting and child development books I've read have good material but are difficult to actually translate into change and action. This book is laid out so clearly with such simple, practical, and effective advice, that I've been able to apply it as I've read. By the time I finished, I felt like I'd already really transformed my parenting methods for the better. I even had my kids (Ages 5 and 7) listen along one day, and they immediately picked up ideas and tips for better family cooperation and communication (it was pretty cute when they started reminding my husband and I of some of the advice during our next family meeting!) The book seems more geared to parents of babies and toddlers because of the examples, but the techniques are effective for preschool and school-aged kids as well (not sure about teens).

I've liked other books by this author but didn't really enjoy this one. Didn't like the plot or pacing. Narrators were both terrible.
