CS Lewis voice
Revisado: 01-13-24
Once you've read enough Lewis, you can begin to hear his authorship or his voice pretty clearly. I didn't know what to expect with Out of the Silent Planet, but it was nothing like I anticipated, yet fully familiar. Definitely worth the listen if you are a Lewis fan.

Exclusively from Audible. 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.' So begins Charles Dickens' most famous historical drama: a gripping tale of war, social injustice and the choice between darkness and light. After being unjustly imprisoned for 18 years, French doctor Manette is released from the Bastille jail in Paris and embarks upon a journey to London in the hope of finding the daughter he never met.

This was my first time truly loving Dickens. Between Simon Callow's performance and the exquisite storytelling, it is safe to say this rocketed up the list of favorite listens of all time.

Historia
At the front of a middle-school classroom in Oklahoma, a boy named Khosrou (whom everyone calls "Daniel") stands, trying to tell a story. His story. But no one believes a word he says. To them he is a dark-skinned, hairy-armed boy with a big butt whose lunch smells funny; who makes things up and talks about poop too much.

Loved!
Revisado: 06-05-23
It is hard to imagine reading this book the first time instead of hearing it in the author's voice. I winced and grimaced, laughed and cried. This story was so real and raw and then ridiculous and outlandish.
I enjoyed every minute.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

CS Lewis never disappoints
Revisado: 09-30-22
While Lewis and I do not hold to the same precise theology, he makes his points in such a way through Screwtape that I'm not sure could have been done in another voice. I especially appreciated the note from Lewis between the letters and the toast at the end.
Great performance by the narrator, as well.

Historia
In January 1956, a tragic story flooded headlines around the world. Five men, spurred by a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ, ventured deep into the jungles of Ecuador. Their goal: to make contact with an isolated tribe whose previous response to the outside world had been to attack all strangers. Through Gates of Splendor, the story of Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Jim Elliot, was first recorded in 1956 by Jim's widow, Elisabeth.

Knowing the ending doesn't make it easier
Revisado: 09-29-22
Knowing the ending to this story before hearing it did nothing to damper the emotion evoked in the last few chapters and the epilogues.
What a worthy and beautiful read for a Believer.

As a member of Fathom Church, I am thrilled that the podcast is on Audible now. The weekly messages are not just feel-good treacle, but challenging Bible-based sermons. A lot gets packed into a 30-40 minute message!

Historia
In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor").

Listen at 1x or pay
Revisado: 10-17-20
I love Jim Gaffigan, but I made the mistake of listening to him narrate this book at 1.15x
Even that little bit of speed changes the timing of the jokes and makes you feel like the comedian who wrote them, didn't know how to deliver them.
I've seen him deliver most of these punchlines on stand-up specials and he definitely knows how to make an audience laugh.
Just my opinion, do yourself a favor and listen to it at 1x.

The most QUOTABLE book I've read in years.
Revisado: 01-05-19
Having not read this book in print, I now can't imagine reading it and not hearing it in the narrator's voice. The only possible improvement I could ever foresee would be for Wendell Berry himself to read it to me uninterrupted in front of a large fireplace, while I have access to a cozy blanket and unlimited snacks.
Fantastic story and fantastic performance.

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!
