The Confectioners Chronicles was an enjoyable YA series. The concepts in the novel were creative and unique and the characters are well fleshed out and feel like the struggle with "real" concepts of identity and relating to others. The novel is certainly solidly in the YA category and some of the drama comes across as such. However it didn't stop me from enjoying the world building mythology of the series.

I can't think of a character that has driven me crazier in a novel recently than Christina. If her age weren't stated early in the novel I easily would have thought she was fifteen or sixteen because she is the perfect whiny teenager for a YA novel. She flip flops more in her characterization even more than she does in her decision making. One moment she's a strong female character I could get behind and the next she's saying sorry three times in the same sentence. The book is good if you want a mindless listen for background noise, but I found that there were too many details in places I didn't want and not enough in the places I did want. Maybe if I were a bit younger I would have been able to relate to the main character more, but I just found her confusing and flighty. The premise and take on mythology was interesting, but unfortunately I couldn't get get past the writing and characterization.

To Hold the Throne is the story of King Herod and the Maccabee Princess Mariamme. Okun's novel covers a time in history not often covered and is very clearly well researched. However, the fact that it was so well researched made me feel as if the novel was bogged down in detail and I found myself zoning out and drowning in the details.

This was the first book by J.F. Penn that I have had a chance to listen to and the first of the Arkane series. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the action in the novel, but I feel like I was missing an element, most likely because I haven't read the rest of the series. Penn's writing is very descriptive and enjoyable.

In Sight of the Mountain was a lovely YA historical fiction novel. Jamie McGillen's nove is very descriptive and the main character, Anna's struggles feel real and fleshed out. Anna's story is adventurous, yet comforting. I loved the descriptions McGillen uses in the novel. I felt like I was in Seattle right along with Anna, and Sarah Brand's narration really brought the story to life.

I grew up around horses and horse racing so I wanted to love Tabikat. Redfern does get a lot of the elements of horse racing correct, but I found that it often got bogged down in the details of horse racing without contributing to the story.

I found that at least in audiobook form Tabikat had way too many details and I found myself zoning out while listening to the audiobook and couldn't keep track of the story.

The second novel in the Hannah Vogel finds Hannah and her son returning to Germany. Hannah's story finds her wrapped up in a kidnapping and murder mystery. The story of the Rohm purge, or The Night of Long Knives, is not a new story, but Cantrell brings an interesting outside perspective to the story from Hannah's view.

In many ways Shadows of Lela reminded me of the early 90s fantasy novels I read as a kid, so slipping into it was like coming home. While there may not be anything truly groundbreaking about the story of a young girl wanting to help unicorns, Shadows of Lela was well written and the characters were well fleshed out.

A Prison in the Sun is what you would classify as a literary mystery. There is a mystery inside of a mystery as Trevor, a ghost writer, tries to find inspiration to write his own novel and gets drawn into a murder mystery on holiday. I did not find Trevor an engaging narrator and was unable to relate to him at all. He was too self-pitying for me and I found that I couldn't really enjoy this side of the story. The mystery inside, the story of the island's mysterious building and the people who used to live there was far more engaging.

Overall, A Prison in the Sun is beautifully written, but was too slow paced (if you want to know a lot about a workout regime it may be of interest) and I could not relate to the narrator so it wasn't for me.
