Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Phenomenal Performance
Revisado: 01-25-19
I would not recommend this book without the fantastic orator who reads it. It is a fantastic book, but one that might read slightly clumsy due to cultural differences. Thanks to the narrator's flawless performance, I was able to properly understand the gravity of the most important spoken words and the inflection by which characters normally speak.
I was nearly moved to tears by the end. This is a difficult book to read, and one which slowly and carefully walks you through all the joys and tragedies of a man's life in pre-revolution China.
I recommend it to anyone seeking a compelling yet simple tale of the peasant in this era. It shines a light on a way of life long gone.

A noir detective thriller in the WH40k universe.
Revisado: 07-21-18
I will say first that I have now read all books in this trilogy. They're all worth the read but this entry is by far the most excellent.
I will agree with other reviewers who say the character development is slightly lacking. Dan Abnett, in my experience, is not a brilliant character artist. They're all acceptable with a few cases of exceptional. Most of the characterization actually comes from the incredible narrator here, Toby Longworth. He is a great protagonist and fills in the blanks for some of the lesser fleshed out personalities using his awesome range of accents.
The strength of the writing is in the mystery, the plot twists, the journey through the established universe. These were my first WH40k novels ever, and I now feel comfortably familiar with the setting.
Read this book if you enjoy excellent action sequences and a good, gritty investigation.
As a final note: one of the most memorable moments in this book is the pursuit which occurs in the first chapter. I mention this because you should know within the first couple of chapters whether or not you will enjoy this story. This book does not have a slow beginning. Prepare to launch immediately into the action.
