Historia
Democracy has been the American religion since before the Revolution - from New England town halls to the multicultural democracy of Atlantic pirate ships. But can our current political system, one that seems responsive only to the wealthiest among us and leaves most Americans feeling disengaged, voiceless, and disenfranchised, really be called democratic? And if the tools of our democracy are not working to solve the rising crises we face, how can we - average citizens - make change happen? David Graeber, one of the most influential scholars and activists of his generation, takes listeners on a journey through the idea of democracy.

This should be more famous
Revisado: 04-15-21
I loved the story of Occupy, which I really had known next to nothing about when it happened, and also the story of democracy, which follows. He is a terrific explainer of things; I never had to rewind because something was too convoluted or dense. Well, I had to rewind once, because I couldn't tell if the reader was saying really or rarely. Also, it's official, I'm an anarchist now. Small a.

Historia
Rarely does a work of history contain startling implications for the present, but in The People, No, Thomas Frank pulls off that explosive effect by showing us that everything we think we know about populism is wrong. Today "populism" is seen as a frightening thing, a term pundits use to describe the racist philosophy of Donald Trump and European extremists. But this is a mistake. The real story of populism is an account of enlightenment and liberation; it is the story of American democracy itself, of its ever-widening promise of a decent life for all.

What did you love best about In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts?
It's not the entirety of the book by any means, but the author has a couple of addictions of his own, both of them of behaviors rather than substances, and his description of them (one of them extremely specific) are relentlessly honest, perceptive, and thorough. He goes into how they affect his life, particularly his dealings with other people, as well as what very likely produced them, and in so doing illuminates the nature of addiction generally in a way that is extremely relatable, often squirmily so!

Historia
Since the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 and Through the Looking Glass six years later, Lewis Carroll’s nonsensical tales have delighted the world with wildly imaginative and unforgettable journeys. While charming children with a heroine who represents their own feelings about growing up, the Alice stories are also appreciated by adults as a gentle satire on education, politics, literature, and Victorian life in general.

He shouldn't have acted.
Revisado: 04-02-16
What would have made Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass better?
His narration of the story was fine and dandy, but when he did voices they were extremely exaggerated and distorted from his actual voice, to the point where I couldn't hear what he was saying. Also, the voice for Alice, where he makes his voice all whispery and squeaky is annoying.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I didn't get to the ending because I gave up trying to decipher what he was saying and the acting was too distracting.
Would you be willing to try another one of Christopher Plummer’s performances?
Hell no.
What character would you cut from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass?
I wouldn't.
Any additional comments?
No.

Historia
To take a skeptical approach to American history is not to dabble in imaginative conspiracy theories; rather, it's to reframe your understanding of this great nation's past and actually strengthen your appreciation for what makes American history such a fascinating chapter in the larger story of Western civilization. And in this bold 24-lecture series, you can do just that.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I loved it! It is long as hell, and there were parts I was less interested in, but I really liked the professor's voice and pace, and general outlook. This approach to history is sorely needed, mainly that our view of it is ridiculously colored by the present, and requires a continuously skeptical approach because of this. The naysayers reviewing it were hoping for more/expecting something different from the word "skeptic" in the title, so read their reviews, but I didn't expect anything more than some observations by a guy who studies these things, not a debunking of every myth ever. So I was happy. Also his voice. I have abandoned perfectly good books because I hate the narration. They all seem to come from the same farm that trains people to say that xyz drug "may not be right for everyone; symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, suicidal ideation and hallucinations" etc. in the most mellifluous Stepford Wife voice possible. Those people need to GO.
