Kit de Waal grew up in a household of opposites and extremes. Her haphazard mother rarely cooked, forbade Christmas and birthdays, worked as a cleaner, nurse and childminder sometimes all at once and believed the world would end in 1975. Meanwhile, her father stuffed barrels full of goodies for his relatives in the Caribbean, cooked elaborate meals on a whim and splurged money they didn't have on cars, suits and shoes fit for a prince. Both of her parents were waiting for paradise. It never came.

I was able to thoroughly identify with this story as a first generation Irish American married to a man from the Caribbean. De Waal’s narration was impeccable. The stories of her childhood were enthralling.

I liked the character development of Sabine, the main character.

Would you consider the audio edition of State of Wonder to be better than the print version?
I loved listening to this book because of the different accents.
Which scene was your favorite?
When many truths were revealed it was so fascinating and in some ways unexpected.
Any additional comments?
This was one of the best books I have ever listened to. I was indeed sad when it ended. Patchett's writing is so detailed and the characters and plot are interwoven but yet, easy to follow. The character development was exceptional. I would love to see a part two of this particular story.
