Historia
When Kristin Kimball left New York City to interview a dynamic young farmer named Mark, her world changed. On an impulse, she shed her city self and started a new farm with him on 500 acres near Lake Champlain. The Dirty Life is the captivating chronicle of the couple’s first year on Essex Farm, from the cold North Country winter through their harvest-season wedding in the loft of the barn.

Realistic dirt
Revisado: 11-22-24
I wondered at the grit of the idealistic and fiery couple who are portrayed in this book. What a life! I enjoy it tremendously but was tired by the relating of the never ending work that that kind of life takes. If you want to start a farm, listen to this and it will open your eyes to the life ahead of you for good and bad.

Historia
Annie Marlow has been through the worst. Rocked by tragedy, she heads to the one place that makes her happy: Oceanside in the Pacific Northwest, the destination of many family vacations when Annie was a teenager. Once there, Annie begins to restore her broken spirit, thanks, in part, to the folks she meets: a local painter, Keaton, whose large frame is equal to his big heart - and who helps Annie fix up her rental cottage by the sea; Mellie, the reclusive, prickly landlord Annie is determined to befriend; and Britt, a teenager with a terrible secret.

interesting story but doesn't do a great job if hooking the reader into the sustainability aspect.

Gem of a sheep’s tale
Revisado: 11-06-24
This was wonderful to listen to. Well written and read. At first I wasn’t sure if it would keep my attention but it did. I found myself looking up information about Orkney for a visual to keep in mind as I listened. I may venture from Northwest rural U.S. for a visit. I have been feeling called back to the Isles of Scotland. Thank you Jane for all of your work with the sheep and this book!

Historia
Helen Rebanks' beautifully written memoir takes place across a single day on her working farm in the Lake District of England. Weaving past and present, through a journey of self-discovery, the book takes us from the farmhouse table of her grandmother and into the home she now shares with her husband, James, their four kids, and an abundance of animals. With honesty and grace, Helen shares her life in days—sometimes a wonder and a joy, others a grind to be survived—weaving in stories that unfolds like a well-written pastoral novel.

This was a great follow-on to James’s Shepherd book. I have been research regenerative agriculture and this five a home perspective of the transition of the farm. Loved it.

Historia
As a boy, James Rebanks's grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in England's Lake District hills was part of an ancient agricultural landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock, and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognizable. The men and women had vanished from the fields; the old stone barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song.

Deep and true.
Revisado: 07-05-24
This is the second book I have listened to by the author. I hoped, as painfully described his farms’ descent into the madness of modern agriculture, that he would pull it story up and into regenerative agriculture. He did. There is so much hope. Look up carbon cowboys and see the good message they likewise spread.

Historia
Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't. He's the first son of a shepherd who was the first son of a shepherd himself; his family have lived and worked in the Lake District of Northern England for generations, further back than recorded history. It's a part of the world known mainly for its romantic descriptions by Wordsworth and the much-loved illustrated children's books of Beatrix Potter. But James' world is quite different. His way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand.

Enlightening
Revisado: 07-12-21
This book has a part of Dr.Newton’s feel to it and yet reflects the author’s varied and extensive life as a seeker of deep spiritual truths. I have been thinking about doing a past life/LBL session for a while and felt safe to try since he also is a clinical therapist and trained in Dr. Newton’s process. I look forward to my session with Pieter.
