Maybe others are more familiar with Junger’s writing style. I’ve read a fair amount about NDEs, and that’s what drew me to this book. A firsthand account of an NDE from one of our great and accomplished writers? Yes please! But the result was disappointing. Junger refuses to make any assertion. He more or less says “It’s probably a hallucination, but I’ll gloss over the evidence that it’s real.” His own personal account focuses more on his medical episode than his spiritual vision. It’s well written, but reeks of the materialist, reductionist assumption that “I probably imagined this crystal clear vision of my own father beckoning me to the other side as I approached death.” What an amazing way to undersell one of the most profound experiences a person can have in life.

Like a spiritual Forrest Gump. The Universe just kept giving Michael Singer exactly what he needed, even when he didn’t think it was what he wanted. Inspiring and changes how I understand life’s plan.

For those skeptical that there is anything of substance to Near Death Experiences, I’d highly recommend this book as a tremendously informed analysis of the phenomenon from somebody who has been rigorously researching this for half a century. For those who already accept NDEs as legitimate, this is an amazing companion explaining what they mean for us, the living. Wonderful listen.

I came in to this book as somebody who already believes in life after death, but by the end of book I was surprised just how many verified accounts there are, and the myriad ways those accounts have been verified. It’s overwhelming. An eye-opening read. Tremendous work by Kean.

I’m a 40 year old father who was recently diagnosed with ADD. My 7 year old son was also recently diagnosed. This book has given me an entirely new context to understand my own mind, my son’s mind and behavior, and what drives so much of the troubled cognition and behavior we both share. I’ve realized that this undiagnosed condition has hugely influenced my whole life and major life decisions. It was difficult to get through this book. I often had to listen just a few minutes at a time, then take a break to absorb the emotional gravity of what I’d just learned. I’ve talked to several people about this book, including with a psychologist and then a psychiatrist, and I’ve been surprised that nobody I’ve talked to has heard of it.

If you’re trying to understand the root causes of ADHD and how to address it at it’s causal level, I can’t recommend enough that you study this book. I’ve become more patient and kind to myself and my son. I’ve become a better father. Obviously growth takes time, but I struggle to think of a better starting point on the ADHD journey than this book along with capable psychotherapy.

If you’ve read Sean’s prior books, you have an idea for what’s in store, but there is definitely new territory here. Eager to implement what’s been taught and described here.

I listened Vol 1 and Vol 2 back to back, so this review is largely for both of them. Sean does an excellent job of spelling out the neuroscience of happiness and the emerging science speculating on the origins of consciousness. As valuable as those are, they weren’t the most memorable part. His personal story of enlightenment was. I really loved this books, and Sean’s delivery keeps things engaging enough that I never had trouble listening for long stretches. I think these books stand as some of my new all time favorites, and I’ll be recommending them liberally. Eager to listen to his next book, and put the lessons learned here into practice.

I really appreciate Sean’s approach to taking a topic that can seem ethereal and difficult, and making it much more grounded for average readers. Will definitely be reading/listening to the next in this series.

An important theory as we approach crisis

I think this book is getting a lot of traction because the idea is important. The central idea that history moves in cycles made up of four generations and a cyclical period spanning roughly one long human life — that’s an incredibly useful and instructive model of history. My primary interest in reading. This was understanding how to cope with the coming crisis, which at this point seems inevitable. I’m not sure that the book touched on those points that I was most interested in, but that’s understandable. The theory itself Hass to be explained, and this is where that theory is laid out.
