This is a demeaning story
Revisado: 04-19-24
The kids fall in love with a harsh task master…. Stockholm syndrome anyone? And the snakes. Snakes are not a good sign. Why are the snakes the most ardent devotees of Mary P? This has definitely got some sketchy undertones if you read beyond the words on the page. Superb narrator though.

Historia
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Historia
If you drive past the lights of downtown Roswell, north on Route 285 into the darkness of the New Mexico desert, you'll run across a little radio station with a single tower. This is the home of WKLEN talk-radio, broadcast through Tower #57. Fresh out of the local community college and eager to start his career in radio production, Luther Stenson arrives for his first shift as an intern on Evening Sands, a late-night radio show focused on the unexplainable and broadcast throughout the lower forty-eight. Luther’s first night in radio quickly becomes one he’ll never forget.

Good audio theater overcomes shaky writing
Revisado: 05-04-23
The story and plot and characters represent a ceaseless string of cliches. It's not as smart as X files or as thoughtful as star trek, but it's a fun time with some satisfying twists. If you have a long drive ahead, you don't dread listening to an episode.

Effective effort
Revisado: 10-06-22
This story is fun and moves along well, the characters are not memorable but they are effective within the story.
The core issue with the story is that it lacks any moral depth. The good guys are good because and the baddies are bad because. There are appeals to how things are meant to be, but no notion of who's making that happen. When you have nothing greater then boilerplate human morality, a story becomes flat and dull.
I'll probably check another book by the author to see if that's a repeat issue. Narrator was strong and effective with primary characters, somewhat silly with the Russians.

Historia
The electricity has flickered out. The automobile age is over. In Union Grove, a little town in upstate New York, the future is nothing like people thought it would be. Life is hard and close to the bone. Transportation is slow and dangerous, so food is grown locally at great expense of time and energy, and the outside world is largely unknown. There may be a president, and he may be in Minneapolis now, but people aren’t sure.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Historia
In his 2005 book, The Long Emergency, James Howard Kunstler described the global predicaments that would pitch the USA into political and economic turmoil in the 21st century - the end of affordable oil, climate irregularities, and flagging economic growth, to name a few. Now, he returns with a book that takes an up-close-and-personal approach to how real people are living now - surviving The Long Emergency as it happens.

Writing superb, narrating iffy
Revisado: 02-03-15
The narrator was disappointing after the tremendous narration of the first book. His voice is just far more whiny to my ear than the deep voice from the first book. But the story was engrossing and enjoyable and worth enduring the new narrator till I got used to him.
