Masterpiece of natural history

This book is in the same vein of “Lab girl”. A bit less memoir, a bit more nature, but so beautifully written (and read) by the author that I sad when it was over. The author uses the cara cara family of birds as his jumping point to talk about all of natural history with a too uncommon poetic flare. One of the best nature books I have “read”.

Too obvious

I’m assuming that the attraction of this book is the procedure of the protagonist’s revenge. The bad guys are ridiculously evil. The serviceman is too blue. I could guess the outcome in the first 2 chapters.

Love Martha Well’s series about a slightly human, neurotic and introverted rouge sec unit. He is funny and plenty smart. You’ll love these stories too.

One of the best audio books ever!

This triller is the story of a sociopath taking revenge on a very evil man. In spite of the protagonist ‘s evil intent, she is completely lovable. Her plan is devious and delightful. The prose is terrific and the narrator could not be better. Absolute perfection!

Too many medical errors

Rarely don’t finish a book once I start, but this had just too many medical errors. I gave up when they used a fluorescent light to search for semen in a woman’s colon at least 48 hours after she had been last raped. This while the detective was the only person in the room with the medical examiner and was assisting! The cop asked if there was a big enough sample to test for DNA, after it was described as a “small pool”. They never discussed whether it might be blood or urine or detergent or ringworm or any of the other things that would light up in a colon. One too many mistakes for me. The narration was too elucidated and slow

Amazing

As a veteran of many, many mysteries and psychological thrillers, I almost always anticipate the ending. This book was crafted to make me think I had it figured out and then it changed again. Absolute mastery. The performance was spectacular. One of my favorite audible books ever. Very different but like hearing the first Harry Potter tape.

Give it a wide miss

I liked this author’s first book and looked forward to hearing this one. It bears a lot of similarities to her first book, including a irritatingly insecure, overly dramatic protagonist. One book like that was ok. A second was too much. It is a story of 4 women who made some stupid choices as 15year olds. The book drags on and on about the terribly serious consequences of what seemed to me to be remarkably stupid behavior but hardly worth the anguish of the protagonist, who I can only describe as stupid and melodramatic. After about the tenth time I exclaimed “You’re being ridiculous”, I stopped listening in disgust. The narrator overly emotional, dramatic reading, again, was ok for one book. This time much too much. The book could have gotten by at 1/2 of the length and might have been less annoying. Surely there can’t be two such sappy characters in London.

Wonderful choice

This is a fabulous, stand alone sci-fi about AI, kind off, including a mystery. The mystery was not that engaging, but the characters carried the story. Very comfortable narrator, a perfect choice for the story. The ending was a surprise. All around great listen. I hope this author has more.

Terrific story from the Ancillary world

Narrator great, story engaging but not so complex I couldn’t follow it on tape (as I’ve hit my 60’s I can’t keep track of plots that are too complex when listening). Interesting characters and FUN!
