Great story. Great narration. Easy listen but still very interesting. Loved the varied characters, their extremely different lives, and how they would come to know each other.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Insightful story of survival of slaves, eloquently told. I really wanted the yellow wife to kill the jailer, but alas the author’s ending was much better.

Story-telling at its best. The narrator was absolutely superb. Reached the middle of the book and couldn’t stop listening. Nothing left unresolved and I really liked the way the author brought closure to all the loose ends.

I was 12 in 1972 and grew up on the edge of the south. Sadly, I can remember the racial prejudices that reared their ugly head occasionally then, and even now, and make us wonder why. Good reframing of friendships and families.

A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummins’ story of a night in April, 1991, when her two cousins Julie and Robin Kerry, and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. Louis.

Did not want to listen to this book but it was one of those that called and I knew I must. The author did not disappoint. It was so well written and related I could not stop until it came to an end. Riveting, touching, and deeply moving are only a few thoughts I can use to characterize. I highly recommend the audio version. I can’t imagine that the book alone can convey the same level of emotion as the author’s own telling. God bless the families that have endured so much and been changed forever. In some tiny way, I count myself among them now because I have heard their story.
