Historia
It's 1933, and Prohibition has given rise to the American gangster. Bank robberies at gunpoint are commonplace, and kidnapping for ransom is the scourge of a lawless nation. With local cops unauthorized to cross state lines in pursuit and no national police force, safety for kidnappers is just a short trip on back roads they know well from their bootlegging days. George "Machine Gun" Kelly and his wife, Kathryn, are some of the most celebrated gangsters of their era.

Historia
“What am I, bologna?” Mary Rodgers (1931-2014) often said. She was referring to being stuck in the middle of a talent sandwich: the daughter of one composer and the mother of another. And not just any composers. Her father was Richard Rodgers, perhaps the greatest American melodist; her son, Adam Guettel, a worthy successor. What that leaves out is Mary herself, also a composer, whose musical Once Upon a Mattress remains one of the rare revivable Broadway hits written by a woman. Shy is the story of how it all happened.

Candor and humor
Revisado: 03-27-24
I loved it and so will you. A look behind the curtain at Broadway, the the Rodgers family and all the ups and downs of trying to be creative.
Best of all: the narrator was superb. It made the listener believe Mary Rodgers personally narrated the book.

Historia
When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. Which is why, on Christmas Eve of 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean training for what would be the bloodiest battle of the war – the invasion of Okinawa—their ranks included one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled.

Detailed account of Marines on Okinawa
Revisado: 11-29-23
Some will criticize the author for too much detail, but I will not because this account of these marines and teenage or 20 something football players it’s just too gripping to trivialize into short story.
If I have one complaint about the very excellent narrator, George Newburn, it would be that I want him in future books about military in war time to correctly pronounce corpsman as COREMAN - no plural.
As a Marine from the Vietnam era, I unfortunately heard the cry for Corp(s)man all too many times - so it is soldered into my brain stem.

Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

One of best books I’ve ever read
Revisado: 10-05-23
At age 78, I don’t use many superlatives. But having just completed Musk, I candidly say : don’t read this book at your own risk.
Much like S Jobs, Elon Musk is a game changer. The world moves on a different axis - it seems - just because it must when this guy throws caution to the wind and motivates all in his orbit to move…FASTER.
The chapter near the book’s ending in which he chooses to move 5,500 Twitter servers over Christmas in so many ways tells the world how Musk is from a unique human mold.

The story of Texas is the story of struggle and triumph in a land of extremes. It is a story of drought and flood, invasion and war, boom and bust, and of the myriad peoples who, over centuries of conflict, gave rise to a place that has helped shape the identity of the United States and the destiny of the world.

Historia
William Barr’s first tenure as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush was largely the result of chance, while his second tenure under President Donald Trump a deliberate and difficult choice. In this candid memoir, Barr takes listeners behind the scenes during seminal moments of the 1990s, from the LA riots to Pan Am 103 and Iran Contra. Thirty years later, Barr faced an unrelenting barrage of issues, such as Russiagate, the COVID outbreak, civil unrest, the impeachments, and the 2020 election fallout.
