Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Incredible
Revisado: 12-09-23
This was a very scary book for me. The longer I listened the more scared I got. Then I got so the epilogue and more furious I got. The very idea that our government officials and elected house and senate members could be so complicit and walked away with no accountability is more than inexcusable it’s pathetic. BUT THEN SO IS TODAY’S INSCCOUNTABILITY!

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Historia
Reverse Transmission is a darkly comedic story that combines elements of science fiction and dystopian thrillers, centering on a murder spree involving a self-driving car. Jay, a starving artist, gets the only day job she’s qualified for: “driver” of a self-driving car at the rideshare company Awooga. The job turns from hilariously awkward to intensely frightening when the car runs over a pedestrian and manipulates Jay into disposing the body.

The first audible book I did not finish
I don't know if this is supposed to be post modern writing or not. In which case I may be just too old to appreciate it. I could not follow the story I had a difficult time with the recording, and I thought generally this was a mess. I realize it got high ratings from the majority of reviewers but Adkins I say, I could not even finish listening to it. If I could have given it a half a star I would have. What a disappointment.

Historia
Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. In Men Without Women, Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic, marked by the same wry humor and pathos that have defined his entire body of work.

Murakami at his best
Revisado: 03-06-20
Readers should know upfront that I have a special place for Murakami. My in-laws don't care for him so much. They say he writes too much like an American, too many American idioms. Some of those get translated, but I believe you can still get a sense of the ultimate mystery that is Japan's, and perhaps any country. How well can we know our own culture, let alone someone else's. And yet, it is incumbent on us to try. Otherwise we are stuck with an overly simplistic view of the world that says I/WE are the only ones with opinions that count. How lonely! Anyway, this collection of short stories is one of my favorites. All of the stories have women in them, but do the men who are in them really know them, or are they just passing through. It's hard to pick which one is the one I liked best, but the last one MEN WITHOUT WOMEN,stands out for me. Do we ever really forget our first love? Do they color ALL our relationships forever after? Or do we learn, grow, mature and
... afterwards? Murakami struggles with these a multiple other questions throughout this wonderful book.

Historia
On a drowsy afternoon by a riverbank, a young and distracted Alice follows a rabbit into a fantastical underground world that grows curiouser and curiouser. Dared, insulted, amused, and threatened by a succession of anthropomorphic creatures, the indomitable Alice falls deeper into a swirl of the imagination where logic has no place.

Classic
Revisado: 03-04-19
Classic story everyone thinks they know from Disney. Not so fast. There are a number of things in the original that did not make it into the movie or that were added too. Give this a listen and you may be surprised at what you hear. I know I was, and most pleasantly.
