The first book I hated
Revisado: 02-04-25
An obnoxious woman predicts deaths of everyday people and they die while she goes on pontificating and telling boring stories from her childhood. There is zero dramatic tension. It’s just everyday lives de and feeling sorry for the victims. I’m halfway through and done!

Historia
The Swedish National Crime Unit receives a video of a young woman in her home, clearly unaware that she's being watched. Soon after the tape is received, the woman's body is found horrifically mutilated. With the arrival of the next, similar video, the police understand that the killer is toying with them, warning of a new victim, knowing there's nothing they can do.

Violence against women and female serial killer
Revisado: 01-21-25
I’ve been listening to all of this author’s books but this one went off the rails with extreme violence and then a teenager trying to seduce her poor little innocent father. I had to stop. It’s just too sick.

Historia
An online video of a girl clawing at the ceiling of her own grave could be the worst thing FBI forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley has ever seen. Perhaps even more disturbing is the implication of the video’s title: “Experiment Number One.” Zoe and her partner, Special Agent Tatum Gray, work as fast as they can to find the monster behind the shocking video, but soon another one shows up online, and another girl turns up dead.

Some good suspense and a sense of humor
Revisado: 01-05-25
There’s a lot to like in this series — definitely listenable and definitely has a strong female character although I’m not sure she’s the main character. She needs to be saved in this book by her man. The Boston accent makes her sound less intelligent— but I’m sure it’s supposed to show that she’s one of the people. There was a Barbara Streisand movie in the 90s that revolved around
Her character crafting “ the perfect bite” out of her salads with extra dressing. Sadly, this is evident here and it’s just about as successful as when Streisand did it. I’m waiting for someone to write a detective who is a vegan. I’m tired of descriptions of dead cow meat and white bread.

Historia
Three Chicago women have been found strangled, embalmed, and posed as if still alive. Doubting the findings of the local PD’s profiler, the FBI calls on forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley to investigate. Zoe quickly gets off on the wrong foot with her new partner, Special Agent Tatum Gray. Zoe’s a hunter, intense and focused; Tatum’s a smug maverick with little respect for the rules.

Intelligent heroine, high body count
Revisado: 01-04-25
I haven’t had much luck finding female sleuths that are competent and look likable so I was happy to discover this author. The plot is suspenseful and I never considered bailing on it. That being said, it leans too heavily on descriptions of torture of helpless victims and I was disappointed when the female character disrobes in the end. I would assume this is supposed to be titillating but it just seemed like a man writing in gratuitous nudity hoping that if he can get a movie deal he’ll get to watch an actress bare her mammaries. I don’t see this as playing well as a scene though. Also there’s a lot of references to killing and torture of animals which I can’t stand.

There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

What kept me listening to this was good characterization. But suspense was nearly absent. I’m not quite through it yet but there isn’t really enough plot to keep me interested.

Historia
Mick “Scorcherˮ Kennedy is the star of the Dublin Murder Squad. He plays by the books and plays hard, and thatʼs how the biggest case of the year ends up in his hands. On one of the half-abandoned “luxuryˮ developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children have been murdered. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care. At first, Scorcher thinks itʼs going to be an easy solve, but too many small things can't be explained.

No suspense, has a Nordic Noir quality
Revisado: 12-26-24
This book is filled with an exploration of madness— how people descend into it and what it’s like when they get there. Who done it is pretty obvious and by the time it’s confirmed I didn’t care although the characterizations kept me listening. In the last part of the book I thought that French could still save this thing if there were a big twist in the end but no such luck.

Historia
True-crime podcaster Jess Keeler has returned to Deeton County, North Carolina, to pick up where her grandfather left off. Sheriff’s Deputy Big Jim Ballard, her grandfather, was a respected detective—until it all came crashing down during a 1972 murder investigation. For Jim, solving the murders of two teens should have been the highlight of his already storied career. Instead, he battled his own mind, unsure where his hunches ended and the truth began.

Great voice performance but this man can’t write women
Revisado: 12-20-24
This is one of the best voice performances I’ve heard, too bad it’s mostly a cast of cardboard bad guys from a different era. What bothered me most was “Jess” — she is a mother who never thinks of her kids, a former stay at home mom who has no friends, she feels nothing when a man puts his hand on her thigh, she seeks out a sexual predator to work with, and she is blank and unfeeling when sexually harassed by this same man. I think this is a kind of male fantasy: that women are plastic objects that can be sexually assaulted and verbally harassed without having any internal damage— or even thoughts about it. We’re human beings, not unfeeling objects. Don’t read this book.

Pro cat mystey
Revisado: 12-10-24
When cat characters were introduced I was waiting for them to be eviscerated at some point in the story. But they were not only allowed to live but to thrive. This wasn’t the most suspenseful story but the characters were likable and that is a lot in my book.

Historia
As funeral mourners stand in silence at Ragmullin cemetery, a deafening cry cuts through the air. Lying crumpled at the bottom of an open grave is the bloodied body of a young woman, and Detective Lottie Parker is called in to investigate. Knowing the body can’t have been there long, Lottie wonders if it could be Elizabeth Bryne, a young woman who vanished without trace just days earlier. And with a new boss who seems to have it in for her, Lottie is under pressure to solve both cases quickly.

Some fun suspense but I don’t like the detective
Revisado: 12-09-24
Irish women seem to have a lot of unplanned pregnancies and this plot device is overused in this book. Women are bullied into carrying any pregnancy to term. Lottie is not a likable character so when her house burns down and she’s about to lose her job I just smiled. I don’t think that’s what the author intended.
