Historia
Daisy Wilder prefers the company of horses to people, bare feet and salt water to high heels and society parties. Then, in the dizzying aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daisy enlists in a top secret program, replacing male soldiers in a war zone for the first time. Under fear of imminent invasion, the WARDs guide pilots into blacked-out airstrips and track unidentified planes across Pacific skies. But not everyone thinks the women are up to the job, and the new recruits must rise above and work side by side despite the resistance and heartache they meet along the way.

Journey through time
Revisado: 08-02-23
Good piece of historic fiction, at times a bit cheesy... what I loved, though, was how it brought me back to Oahu. Hawaii of the 1940s wasn't altogether different from the one I grew up with in the 1990s. A bit more forward leaning back then, perhaps.

Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

It's not often that I hear a narrator do such a moving story justice.

Provides the listener with much needed insight into how and why we got where we are today. Added bonus: it's a great refresher for those a little rusty in history, too.

Combining compelling data with anecdotal evidence, author Leena Al Olaimy sheds light on unorthodox and counterintuitive strategies to address social woes that groups like ISIS exploit. Using religion, neuroscience, farming, and even love, this book offers many inspiring examples and - for once - an optimistic outlook on how we can not just fight but prevent terrorism.

Historia
A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days, 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

There was some really good material in here. Sadly, the narration was extremely distracting; everything was like an action movie trailer voice-over...without the emotion.
