Unnecessary inserted politics took away from the story. Made it half way before giving up. I suggest getting out of CA once in awhile and talking to people outside your bubble.

I really enjoyed the series until this book. The idea of Grandma planning ahead for SHTF and leaving that legacy to her grandson first by her Will, then in the form of letters of encouragement, secret maps and words of wisdom is something that really appealed to me as a very clever writing tool.
Joe too was a very appealing character. He was likable and normal, the average guy trying to survive and help people.
However somewhere in the first third of this book, the characters started to act, well, out of character. Joe went from helpful to hard without any real transition. Chloe became timid. Then not timid. Then timid again. It was weird! I had to keep backing up the book to re-listen to scenes to make sure the characters talking were actually the ones I thought were talking.
The last part of the book jumped around like crazy. Joe became a father, then a grandfather in the blink of an eye. The people captured and flown away were just...gone. The resolution to this was a note from the author saying he was going to write a separate series about this-- and that's fine, but he needed to resolve what was happening here first!
I'm really sad to write this review, because until this book, I really liked this series a lot!

This book was amazing, probably my top book in the last few years. I really did listen to it 3 times in a row. It made me laugh and tear up every single time. The author did a skillful job of weaving past and present, and the characters were well-developed. You become so invested in Ove, the cat and all of the neighbors that the story feels completely real, and the interactions between them are genuine. If this author's other books are even half as good as this one, I will be getting all of them!

What would have made The Light of the Fireflies better?

The characters could be less stilted and one dimensional, with more realistic and believable emotions.

What was most disappointing about Paul Pen and Simon Bruni - translator ’s story?

It's as if 'The Road' and Flowers in the Attic' had a baby, then abused it. I could not understand why the author tried to make these characters sympathetic, when they were all, grandma included, horrible people. The end made me sad and irritated.

Have you listened to any of Scott Merriman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never listened to the narrator before, but he was fine.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you like Dean Koontz's work, you will be fine with the story. It's not horrible, just not that great.

What was most disappointing about Dean Koontz’s story?

The conclusion feels ripped off.

Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?

I've never really liked his voice that much, but I can live with it.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The idea was interesting, although it's been done before. I'd probably like it better fleshed out into a full novel, you know, Koontz style- hardworking independent man meets smart yet sexy woman and they hook up to fight the evil government overlords, or possible monsters. There could be some smart dogs too. You never know.

I enjoyed this book a lot as an adult, but I really wish I had discovered this jem when I was a child. I liked it now, but I would have loved it then. Narration was fantastic. The story is about a young boy who, orphaned by his parents, was raised by his Cherokee/half-Cherokee grandparents in the mountains at the turn of the century, and how they lived their lives. Highly enjoyable!

Sooo tired of books where the US govt is bad and the military generals all hover behind closed doors working on viruses and super soldiers. And trying to make a super soldier using the eboli virus? Really?

In this book he uses the various seasonal holidays to tell tales about his life and connect them to whichever holiday he now does not celebrate. There's Christmas, of course, but also Columbus Day, and Martin Luther King's birthday. I have to admit, traveling through Penn's profane views, he still makes a great case for atheism, but he does it with humor and insight. It's a fun book and well worth reading, even if you are not an atheist!

And other stories from the remarkable Penn Jillette. Even if you are not an atheist, you will enjoy the amusing and quirky stories that he spins out about his life, family, successes, failures, and of course, what body part you should never under any circumstances put in the hair dryers of your enemies.

You will also learn why he is an atheist and what he really believes, but you want to know about the hair dryer. Also fat Elvis. Yes indeed.

I like horror novels, but why, why, why do SO MANY of them end up being all about incest and inbreeding? I enjoyed the book until I got about half way through, and then realized where the book was heading. Ugh. I mean yes, it's horrific, but try to be more creative people! The narrator was good at least, and made the whole thing more bearable, but really, the book was boring and unimaginative.
