Historia
An American epic of science, politics, race, honor, high society, and the Mississippi River, Rising Tide tells the riveting and nearly forgotten story of the greatest natural disaster this country has ever known, the Mississippi flood of 1927. The river inundated the homes of nearly one million people, helped elect Huey Long governor and made Herbert Hoover president, drove hundreds of thousands of blacks north, and transformed American society and politics forever.

Good history. Bad narrative
Revisado: 10-09-24
The narrator ruins the story with a monotone of disdain for everything good and bad. The author includes details of race relations unrelated to the flood.

Great reader performance
Revisado: 07-31-24
An easy to follow and understand text. At times the writer seems to downplay Ike’s intelligence and is unduly critical of his decision especially in the united front versus quick movements before
Before Bastine.
In all. He also barely mentions Clarks debacle at Anzio and his failed turning movement in Korea.. He goes as far to say “Eisenhower was
not an intellectual” and he does not criticize Lodge’s mistakes over and over again. Ie, the Russians building of the dam and the U2 incident.
. Does it take a Ph.D. to be called an intellectual? Especially when so much knowledge and skill go into the success of a country and world with Ike as president. The books quality is in its story presentation and its unique use of vocabulary.

Bad sound. Speaker wanders off topic.
Revisado: 06-20-24
I looked forward to getting this but the sound quality destroys the presentation. Merton is a philosopher who makes observations and then changes the subject.

Acting over powers the story

I liked visualizing rather than reading, but it seemed abridged and over acted. Trading emotion for the real story.

Gives good background but very narrow
Revisado: 02-28-24
Bartlett seems to think Europe was all about organized religion. He covers well the importance of the Italian peninsula. Since his Ph.D. Is from the same university as his job, His knowledge is very much a product of educational inbreeding.

More boring than any math
Revisado: 11-27-23
The narrator sounds like an unemotional nerd. Maybe it’s an AI voice. I m to chapter four and all I’ve heard is how to teach or be an algebra student but the stuff about algebra hasn’t appeared. Too bad. The title doesn’t match the presentation, and the idea of singingg by songs to learn algebra is nuts.

Not that great
Revisado: 11-08-23
I m a fan of Adam’s research through Arnold, but he really strings this out. The intro is over and over why so many plans do not work. The first chapters are about what the reader will learn…at some point. It’s just hard to stay engaged. I feel ripped off.

Historia
This fictional recreation of the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 is a stunning work of imaginative history, from Shelby Foote, beloved historian of the Civil War. Shiloh conveys not only the bloody choreography of Union and Confederate troops through the woods near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, but the inner movements of the combatants' hearts and minds.

Difficult as a first “read” on tape
Revisado: 11-08-23
I find this book to be a real stretch for Foote. He tells the battle of Silo (a battlefield I’ve visited with a guide dressed as general grant)through the voice of a yankee deserter and a southern fighter. The performance is poor because it’s difficult to tell whom is speaking. Also, it’s not really about the battle. It’s about narrative factionalize accounts of the men involved. I found the performance and the story troublesome. Maybe reading the book will bring it into focus. I believe Audible failed on this one.

Totally Hemingway

The story puts the reader alongside the living, the loving and the dead.
The ending is especially great drama with page by page and line by line descriptions of the taste and feel of life and then the lead character springs the fateful trap.
