A warm, funny, fascinating and highly informative account of life in the first year after an ADHD diagnosis
Revisado: 02-21-25
With a deft and highly amusing touch, Matilda Boseley takes us through the emotional (and often hilarious) rollercoaster ride of her first year after her ADHD diagnosis in her mid-20's. Part memoir and part highly informative guide to navigating ADHD as an adult, this audio book (beautifully narrated by Matilda herself) feels fresh, extremely well-researched and highly relevant. The insights Matilda gives into the history and our evolving understanding and attitudes towards ADHD are particularly fascinating. And her accounts of gluing her feet into her boots and riding her bike into Albert Park Lake never get old! A true gem, and I would say essential reading if you are, or are close to, an ADHD person. Genuinely brilliant.

Can’t say when I have enjoyed a novel more. Complex, heart breaking, funny. Such a compelling story that has also helped me understand the lives of Indigenous people a little more. Can’t wait to get into her next book!

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

A much broader canvas than 'The Martian' - it almost couldn't get much broader! - but still manages to maintain the moment-to-moment urgency and drama, as well as adding a warmer emotional through line. Terrific, exhilarating hard science fiction. A great listen.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Ingenious sci-fi/pulp detective novella by Scalzi

Like all the best classic science fiction, this is an extremely nifty exploration of the way the world would be if one specific thing was different. In this case, the difference is more fantastical than strictly scientific, but regardless, the niftiness is undiminished. Well worth the 2 hour listen!

Had me laughing out loud on the tram!
Revisado: 07-12-19
'Losing the Plot' had me laughing out loud on my daily commute! It’s a highly entertaining big-hearted read about Vanessa, an under-confident dental nurse who dares to dream big when she writes a racy romance novel, only to have it stolen. Whilst Coleman’s writing is very witty and the characters are nicely observed, sitting under the story are some terrific contemporary themes ranging from plagiarism to the cost of overly idealised romantic love. It was hard to put the book down and I would recommend it to anyone who likes some ‘Com’ with their ‘Rom’.
