For Katie True, a keen gut and quick wit are just tools of the trade. Historia
It’s 2006. After a string of rejections from men who tell her they could never, ever, ever see her “that way,” awkward third-grade teacher Micaela Blei signs up for a mysterious course called “The Divine Feminine,” and feels like she might have found the key to the perfect life. Turns out if you’re an A student, you can get an A in anything–including men. Pretty soon she’s learning to "conjure" her desires with vision boards, flirtations, and even a daring jumbotron viewing party for her, ahem ... "divine center."

Felt like a deep and funny conversation with a friend
Revisado: 12-19-24
My only complaint is that I wish it was longer — I was so sad when it ended that I didn’t get to spend any more time in Micaela’s company! This story is so wonderful and funny and charming that its depth almost sneaks up on you. It’s an incisive critique of the self-help industry but feels just like a phone call from your best friend. A lot of this is due to the author’s wonderful, natural and conversational narration.

Worthwhile
Revisado: 01-16-22
I bought this book because I was looking for a Christmas-themed thriller to read. After I was a little ways into it, I realized there was something a bit off about the female characters and googled Klavan. It turns out he's a conservative commentator, which makes a lot of sense based on some of themes in the book. If that kind of thing really bothers you, I wouldn't recommend reading this. I am not conservative, but read on anyway because I was intrigued by the plot. I do feel like I got a lot out of it -- the story was intriguing, the scenes well constructed, and the message (about judging people on an individual basis) was interesting to me. The depictions of female characters still annoyed me at times, but I'm glad I finished it regardless. Oh, and the narrator is great.

Historia
Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She's charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual. Trapped in a shared office together 40 (ok, 50 or 60) hours a week, they've become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship.

Historia
Private investigator Isabel Spellman is back on the case and back on the couch -- in court-ordered therapy after getting a little too close to her previous subject. Filled with the signature side-splitting Spellman antics, Revenge of the Spellmans is an ingenious, hilarious, and disarmingly tender installment in the Spellman series.

Historia
An American girl finds her prince in this "fun and dishy" (People) royal romance inspired by Prince William and Kate Middleton. American Bex Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it's adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall - and Bex who finds herself accidentally in love with the heir to the British throne. Nick is wonderful, but he comes with unimaginable baggage.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 09-25-15
This story takes a while to get going -- the beginning is a little slow and bland, and I almost stopped listening -- but when it finally does, a few hours in, it's actually something really special. I actually found it to be surprisingly unpredictable and interesting, with real, relatable, well-developed characters that I grew very attached to.

The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games
Revisado: 07-04-15
The series is like a combination of The Bachelor and Hunger Games, but it definitely only has the depth of the former. The characters are shallow and repeatedly make stupid decisions for no particular reason. And yet... and yet I can't stop reading this series. It's a little like how I felt reading Twilight, another series which I read in its entirety while never quite liking it.
The narration is not terrible, but is very flat and mechanical and makes the characters seem even less vivid than they already do.

Historia
The selection began with 35 girls. Now, with the group narrowed down to the Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's love is fiercer than ever. The closer America gets to the crown, the more she struggles to figure out where her heart truly lies. Each moment she spends with Maxon is like a fairy tale, filled with breathless, glittering romance. But whenever she sees her first love, Aspen, standing guard, she's swept up in longing for the life they'd planned to share.

Terrible... and yet I'm still reading
Revisado: 07-04-15
I find the characters in this series to be unlikeable, selfish, and underdeveloped. America herself seems to have no problem keeping two guys on the line, despite repeated reminders of serious consequences. Maxon is condescending and boring. Aspen is probably the worst of all. And yet there must be something to this story, because I keep listening, and will probably finish the story.
The narration could definitely be better. It's not terrible, but I think the characters would come off a little more vividly if her tone wasn't so flat and Siri-like.

Kinsella's best book
Revisado: 07-04-15
Even though I'm a grownup girl in her thirties, I really enjoyed Sophie Kinsella's first YA book, even more than I have her previous books. It was such a vivid depiction of what it's like to suffer from anxiety -- while actually being funny and heartwarming, like all of her other books. The characters in this book are so funny and lovable. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book. Anyone suffering from anxiety, or who has a loved one suffering from it, should especially listen to this book. Narration was absolutely perfect.

Historia
What if a reality TV show like Jersey Shore set up production in the fictional seaside resort Sea Haven? What if hitting the gym, tanning, and doing a little laundry aren't the only things the contestants get into? By-the-book officer John Ceepak and his wisecracking young partner, Danny Boyle, have to babysit the buff and boozy kids partying it up in a Jersey shore rental house for TV’s summertime hit Fun House while simultaneously trying to stop the rowdy kids from breaking the law up and down the beach. But even Ceepak and Danny can’t stop one young cast member from being murdered—and others from being threatened with the same fate.

Not the best of the Ceepak series
Revisado: 06-10-15
Would you listen to Fun House again? Why?
Probably not. I love the Ceepak series, but this one is not the best.
If you’ve listened to books by Chris Grabenstein before, how does this one compare?
This is probably the weakest book in the Ceepak series -- which, granted, is a series I love. But there's not much at stake for the main characters in this one, and the mystery isn't too difficult to solve.
Which character – as performed by Jeff Woodman – was your favorite?
Definitely Danny! The narrator plays him perfectly.
