Just Meh, and the explicit sex scenes seemed like they were trying to improve bland meat loaf with hot sauce.
Revisado: 03-02-25
After listening to the “Miss Fortune” series by the author, I was expecting more humor and great characters. Didn’t get either!One-dimensional characters. Story was just OK, plot twists felt forced. Seems like an early effort by the author. Narration good but not great, Wish there had been a notice that this included explicit sex, I wouldn’t have bought it. I don’t object when they are essential to the plot, but these weren’t. Take a lesson from Diana Gabaldon instead.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Drags a bit. Found myself putting it down for long periods
Revisado: 08-16-24
Pleasant, but not riveting. Not as engaging as the author’s previous works. Although the journalistic process was interesting. I didn’t realize how hard it could be for a journalist to get a story released.

Revisado: 12-27-23
Loved Markham’s perspective. Fun Easter egg hunt for previous book titles, I would like to see Markham spin off on his own for full novels. Scene with “Brother” is a great nod to recent research indicating both boys survived and escaped the Tower.

Fabulous Narrator! Must hear more
Revisado: 03-21-22
Sam Dewhurst-Phillips is a terrific narrator. The work “narrator” is insufficient. His voice is flexible and rich, and unlike some other, he is great at having consistent voices for each character, using various accents with skill. His female characters have believable voices, although he relies a tad too much on a breathy quality for them. I wish he could develop more varied “chuckles” because all the characters sound the same for that, jarring me out of the story. Still, I put him up there with Simon Vance, one of the greats! His skill elevates even a weak story, the mark of excellence in narration. Give this man more titles and I will listen!

Grand in scope and vivid in detail, McCullough’s gripping narrative thrusts listeners headlong into the complex and fascinating world of Rome in the tumultuous last days of the Republic. At the height of his power, Gaius Julius Caesar becomes embroiled in a civil war in Egypt, where he finds himself enraptured by Cleopatra, the nation's golden-eyed queen. To do his duty as a Roman, however, he must forsake his love and return to the capital to rule.

Gutted version of actual book!!
Revisado: 09-19-21
Why on earth don’t they record unabridged versions of Colleen McCullough’s books? Cleopatra hardly appears in the this hacked-up version. I thought it was unabridged, especially based on stated length. Returning it. Don’t waste the credit!!!

Wooden narration, plodding writing. Skip this and go straight to Lindsey Davis
Revisado: 07-31-21
I read all of the original series 30 years ago, and enjoyed them. I later moved on to Lindsey Davis’ fabulous Marcus Didius Falco series. The difference is like might snd day. It’s like the difference between fine and cheap chocolate. Once you’ve had Godiva, you can’t be bothered with Hershey’s kisses anymore.
It’s been so long since I read the series that I am left wondering if this book is an aberration, or the originals were not as good as I imagined. Or is it just ruined by the horrible narration? I’ll be avoiding Steven Plunkett like the plague!

Great narration by Zara Ramm, as usual. The food and drink descriptions left me ravenous, especially during this pandemic pot-roast quarantine year. Why all the posh Victorians didn’t die young of heart attacks and strokes is amazing! And it wouldn’t have been Christmas without Markham. Thanks Jodi!
