Stories all different or unfamiliar
Revisado: 01-03-25
Weird! Either I've entered a parallel universe or I'm having a stroke. I've read and re-read all of The Maestro's work many times over but one story about a haunted man was TOTALLY unfamiliar.
The title story has always been my least favorite, so I'll give it a pass. At least it was unchanged. "The Ledge" was also correct.
But "Quitters, Inc.," normally a fave of mine, was missing or had changed elements, like the WIFE getting zapped, and the HUSBAND having to watch. The protagonist seeing an ad for the chilling service used to be at the beginning of the story. The boss warns him of the finger loss punishment in the original. It was mentioned at the end. It felt like I was listening to Steve's first and far inferior draft. How is this possible?
And yes, the narration was horrific! We audiophiles have been spoiled by King's divine stable of readers over the last 15 years or so.

In this provocative and inspiring audiobook, David Richo distills 30 years of experience as a therapist to explain the underlying roots of unhappiness - and the surprising secret to finding freedom and fulfillment. There are certain facts of life that we cannot change - the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time.

Delightful, Brilliant, and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 08-27-21
At first I thought I was going to listen to hours about a privileged, charmed life, but Anne's beautiful, expressive voice quickly won me over. I forgave the copious name-dropping, as there was usually a delightful story attached to each celebrity. I discovered that very bad things can and do happen to the rich and entitled, tendencies Anne never exhibited her entire life. Instead, she presents an intelligent, funny, thoughtful woman with a deep reverence for family and friends. Her patience, tolerance, stamina, loyalty, and ability to love unconditionally are profound. I would so love to meet her.

Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son, Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday - but Sean does.... Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother.

A n Ambitious Effort Ruined by Characters
Revisado: 08-24-21
It is hard to believe that Sean's therapist could be that truly unprofessional and cruel. In the case of Richard, the author cod not do his homework on police interrogation techniques., except maybe by watching bad cop shows. The plot got confusing toward the end. As always, the overused word "moment" appears on nearly every page. The author constantly said "So and so was SILENT" The narrator was good but his performance of "Mr. Yuck" was horrible, as was the adult police interrogation. Too bad. This could have been a good story.

If you can handle heinous crimes described in gruesome detail, this is a fascinating look into a truly "Deviant" mind. It is hard to believe that a man four inches shorter than me could perpetrate such horror. R.C. Bray's deep, chilling, evokes a relentless detective on the case and will keep you up late into the night.

Depressing and Repetitive
Revisado: 05-28-21
I feel great pain for the horrific abuse the author endured, but she repeats the same subjects, character descriptions and events over and over. The book could be a third shorter. She tries to humanize some of her tormentors, but to what end? The narrator's "Long Island Accent" is pure Bronx, too. I couldn't finish it, because it kept going back to the same points.

Fascinating
Revisado: 01-24-20
What a historical and autobiographical treat. J.B. West takes us through his amazing 28-year tenure as Head Usher in the White House during the Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and early part of the Nixon administrations. With a welcome economy of delightful prose and a taste of the delicious conversations between himself and all six First Ladies, West takes us into the rarely seen world "Upstairs at the White House," where he must oversee its entire operation, AND report directly to each First Lady. With tact and humor, he respectively and often affectionately takes us through the mundane, the insane, and the well-known crises of each term. He concentrates on the unsung heroes who keep it all together: the ushers, butlers, valets, maids, cooks, plumbers, electricians, gardeners ... you get my drift. West remains humble throughout but his deep respect and love for the PRESIDENCY and White House, not just any particular admininstration, makes this the ultimate read for everyone, despite your particular feelings toward each of these presidents and especially, their fascinating wives. I would love to hear his thoughts on all the subsequent White House staffs and First Ladies!
