Historia
For centuries, the mysterious dark-robed figure has roamed the globe, searching for those whose complicity and cowardice have fed into the rapids of history’s darkest waters - and now it is heading in our direction. It has been years since Helen Franklin left England. In Prague, working as a translator, she has found a home of sorts - or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore.

Love Sarah Perry, Love Melmoth
Revisado: 09-24-19
Fell in love with the Essex Serpent about a year and a half ago, and I was so excited when I saw Melmoth's release. I have never heard a better intro to a book probably in my life. It captivates you as soon as it begins. It is just like the Essex Serpent where you cannot tell if it is going to be spooky/fantastical or if it is merely all in one's head. Even after reading it I'm not sure.

I love this one!
Revisado: 09-24-19
China Mielville can be an intimidating author because of how intense the meanings behind some of his stories are, but this one is a greatly accessible book while containing a plethora of intrigue, suspense, and food for thought. The set up of the cities is so well done and the narrator does a great job with the accents and idiosyncrasies. This book made its way into my top ten!

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Truly I think about this book all the time
Revisado: 09-24-19
This book starts off slow. Please, stick with it. It's one of the best books I've listened to this year. Maybe even ever. It's almost 33 hours long and I was still bummed when it finished!! It's fascinating and fantastical and funny and is self-aware without being too satirical. Honest to god, I think about this book all the time. It just pops into my brain out of the blue! It's so well written and so well read. You won't regret this one!

Intriguing but Unimpressive
Revisado: 09-24-19
I love an alternative take on a fairy tale but this story has too much going on and yet somehow at the same time not enough to keep me hooked. I was simultaneously confused and underwhelmed. Not bad, but disappointing after high expectations.

Maybe I'll be able to finish it someday...
Revisado: 09-24-19
I really wanted to like this book, it's been on my radar for a long time. I had a credit and decided to give it a try, but I don't think I'll be able to finish it unfortunately. Yes, it's a fast-paced, sexy, historical fiction story but the writing is a bit stilted and there's nothing that makes me attached to any of the main characters. The plot isn't gripping and the back and forth of the narrative with police interview transcripts is confusing. Unless you're an absolute die hard 1800s western fan I would skip this one.

a bit disappointing
Revisado: 03-21-18
Based on the description I expected a really dynamic and complex story with enough fantasy to be fun and interesting, but LaValle only scratched the surface of the potential of the plot. The ending was too rushed and simplistic, and even though each character’s background was carefully explained he never continued their analysis. It wasn’t a very compelling story, just enough mystery to keep me going till the end but not any more than that.
