Great ending!
Revisado: 12-18-24
I liked the brief autobiography of one of my favorite guitarist composers. At times, it is a litany of accomplishments and, though interesting, can read like a resume. I’m sure he will get the job since he has the recommendation of the Boss’ Son. He didn’t need the rest of the resume…

Historia
In this grand poetic vision of the universe, Lawrence Krauss tells the dramatic story of the discovery of the hidden world that underlies reality - and our place within it. Reality is not what you think or sense - it’s weird, wild, and counterintuitive, and its inner workings seem at least as implausible as the idea that something can come from nothing. With his trademark wit and accessible style, Krauss leads us to realms so small that they are invisible to microscopes, to the birth and rebirth of light, and into the natural forces that govern our existence.

Inflated title: better title would be ‘An appreciation of quantum physics’.
Revisado: 07-17-24
The story that is told is reminiscent of a book that I had to read in undergrad called An Appreciation of Music. It was designed to instill the reader with a basic appreciation of the great composers, the great compositions, and the rudimentary knowledge needed in order to enjoy music. While I did find myself looking through old textbooks and Googling topics from this book because of appreciation for the subject inspired by this book, it did nothing else for me. Though the author made attempts at philosophical arguments, I found them to distract from the better parts of the book. At the end of the book, looking back on whether I wanted to listen again, it struck me that I was put off by the idea. The prospect of further quantizing the universe is like finding more digits of pi to me, so I looked into this instead and found that it had been calculated to 105 trillion digits! Though math can be fun for the sake of math, a rough sketch of pi serves just fine. I have to agree with the government about avoiding spending much on something just for the beauty of it. A rough sketch of the universe serves us well. It sounds like physicists have found it to be an irrational number.

Historia
Against all odds, Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby has become an Auditor, enforcing laws about magic for Boston’s Department of Unorthodox Affairs. But Grimsby soon realizes the daily grind of his job is far removed from the glamour he imagined. Overlooked for every exciting case, Grimsby tires of being told to handle mundane magical troubles, and appropriates a case file intended for a friend. Alongside Leslie Mayflower, the temporarily unretired Huntsman, Grimsby aims to crack the case and discover the origin of a strange, unfinished ritual.

Dresden reborn
Revisado: 01-02-24
As long as Grimsby doesn’t become the Winter Knight, it will be cool. This skirts a very Dresdenesque world that you could even imagine as some future post Dresden magical apocalypse wherein magic users no longer are denied and in hiding, but are now policed by the unorthodox affairs instead of a White Counsel. It would be cool if Rayne was Harry’s great granddaughter.

Historia
Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this new edition - now with a foreword by Michael W. Smith, testimony by Rich Mullins and the author's own epilogue, "Ragamuffin Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth.

Historia
Spurred by personal tragedy, Elaine Pagels turns to a consideration of the Gnostic Gospels, in particular, the Gospel of Thomas. As opposed to the Gospel of John, which asserted that Jesus was an eternally existing aspect of God who came to earth to save humankind, the "secret" Gospel of Thomas agrees that Jesus was in some sense divine, but says that a streak of divinity can be found in all of us.

Not what I thought.
Revisado: 04-14-23
It promised to answer a question that I didn’t know I was asking when I first heard that there was a ‘Gospel of Thomas’. I wanted to know why it was excluded from what would become the Bible. I am also a bit troubled by the Gospel of John now. Unlike the author, who says she always liked this Gospel, I liked it less than the other three. There seemed dissonance with the other 3 and, not being a biblical scholar, I never questioned why. I just knew John was different and an outlier. Now I wonder if it was right to have been included with the other 3.

Possibly better than Jim Butcher
Revisado: 04-13-23
This was the book I was hoping for and brought me back to an innocent Butcher world. It’s better than Dresden, which has become sort of a soap opera or comic book to me…with too many big ups and downs. I’ll still read my comics but liked this refreshing urban fantasy a lot.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

What Dresden should be in my opinion.
Revisado: 08-07-22
Really similar to James Marsters. In some ways better but in some ways not as good (I like his Bob better), and I’d listen to future Dresden Files narrated by the author. I liked this better than the apocalyptic setting of the last Novel which was my least favorite Dresden book. I’m still sore about Karrin’s death.

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Great performance, ok story.
Revisado: 01-12-21
Lulu Miller should be a voice actress. I definitely felt she was able to take me with her through her joys and sorrows and excitement and depression. Spoiler alert! It wasn’t so much what she was saying because I really don’t have much interest in a murdering misogynistic father of eugenics nor taxonomy of fish nor even philosophy. I am interested in the origin and meaning of language, but she only touched upon this lightly. In a book where she cautions about the importance or lack thereof of words and labels, it is the way she says them that makes this audiobook good.
