This book was just ok for me. The writing was good, the story was alright, and I liked Sandra Oh as the narrator. Otherwise this isn’t a book that I would recommend to anyone or a book that makes me want to read/listen to anything else by Min Jin Lee. 3 Stars.

A hard listen for me

It probably took me 25 hours to listen to this book… I started it over 2.5 hours in and then continued to hit back constantly throughout. If I didn’t focus solely on the what I was listening to I was lost within minutes. The writing style was hard for me to digest and it felt like a series of sentences at times.

The story was good, I liked the characters, and the narrators were all really good in their roles. I’m glad it’s over though.

I wanted to like it...

I just couldn't get into this book. I had a hard time keeping the characters straight and not a lot happens. I thought about re-reading it, but actually reading the phyical book rather than listening, but I doubt I will ever do that. There are too many other good books that I know I will like to try again on this miss.

Not what I was hoping for…

I work in the printing industry and Katherine Kellgren is one of my all time favorite narrators, so I had to get this book. In all it probably took me 3 times as long to listen to because of all of the times I had to skip back from glazing over. At 2 hours in I started over because I couldn’t follow who the villains were. By the end it was mildly enjoyable but overall a slog to get through.

This was pretty middle of the road for me. The story was ok but uneventful. The narration was really hard to get used to - the weird, nasally whispering really took me a while to get over, but by the end it wasn’t much of an issue. The narrator was good at switching back and forth between characters and would get 4 stars if not for the distracting whispering.

Loved it!

I really loved this book, to the point where I was thinking about it at work and counting down the hours until my ride home. The narrator is amazing, probably one of my top favorites now and I’ll look for other books she’s done. The story kept my attention and had lots of good twists and turns… I will definitely continue listening to the rest of this series!

I just could not get into this book. I’m sure it took me twice as long to listen to because I kept having to skip back after realizing I had glazed over. The narrator was distracting and the story was just meh. I did find there were a few lines in the book that stood out and were really beautifully written.

I hated it!

I stopped listening to another book I bought partway through right before this one so I felt obligated to finish this time. It was painful - I had to force myself to make it to the end and I skipped the outtakes just to make the hurt stop. This feels like someone that says whatever over-the-top thing they can think of for the attention. I definitely won’t bother with any of her other books. I’m so glad it’s over!
