Historia
Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

Leaving time
Revisado: 11-19-19
The book is 15 hrs. long. I wrote the time factor because time is used in the most fascinating manner in this book
First, narrator did the voices so well. From male, to a child, to southern dialect , to the women who were discernible as they each spoke.
It was a very detailed story line & I have to admit, I kept saying :”Come on! Come on! Move it along!”
Then then zinger! Amazing development of the story.
Next: the amazing knowledge Jodi Picoult gleaned about elephants made me want to find out more about these amazing animals. Although the story is fiction, information about these animals is true based on her excellent research. Added so much to the read.
On the negative side, narrator was good, but after awhile her voice dragged (for the drama, maybe?)But it became annoying. Still she did a good job.

Murder wasn’t the only one who should fly the coop!
Revisado: 11-14-19
Story was infantile. Mystery was not a mystery.
Characters silly.
Narrator had a whiskey voice but wasn’t enjoyable for the story.
If I hadn’t bought it on “a 2 for one” credit I’d have returned it!!
Don’t recommend.Waste of my time.
I love my audible. Listen as I Quilt.
I fast forwarded. I slept thru some. Never felt I missed any part.
Sigh!!

Funny, clever, good story line And
Revisado: 01-29-19
Just completed my 8th Rhys Bowen book, “On Her Majesty’s Frightfully Secret Service”
Narrated wonderfully by Katherine Kelgren.
Storyline is funny, clever, read with great storytelling technique by the talented Ms. Kelgren. She makes listening to the story great fun. She has an amazing arsenal of voices ——male, female, British, Italian, German, child, etc.
I’m so very sorry she passed away. It’s such a loss!!
Briefly, we follow Lady Georgianna, cousin to the king but the poor side set in 1930’s in England & Scotland, and in this book, also Italy. She’s always involved innocently in a murder. It’s told in first person so we are privy to her thought which are very comical at times.
It’s a lightweight book but I enjoy listening while I Quilt.
Ms Bowen is quite a good author developing her plot—murder, espionage, romance, family among the 1930’s rich.
Initially found these books looking for clean, good stories. I think it’s written more for the women.
If you like light reading, good narration, funny, good plot, give it a try. You may want to start with first book so as to be introduced to the characters as they will be in each of the books thereafter.
Enjoy!

My first Scottoline book. So tense. Such a good plot. Good characters. Couldn’t bear to stop it to do things I had to do. Told my spouse I’d see him later! HAD to listen. Great end. Such organized development. Must have done a lot of research. I wonder if her other books are as good. I’d recommend it highly. Narrator, George Newbern very good. Good voice changes. Characters were very easily recognized with his voice changes.

“Need To Know” by Karen Cleveland
Revisado: 02-15-18
Wow!! What a great “read”. I had to force my pace to listen to this book or I’d never have eaten, slept nor anything necessary.
Now, the storyline started slowly but as it developed it was a masterful way to get the “reader” involved with Vivian’s mind set.
She’s devoted mom, excellent as an analyst for the government, loving wife. Wonderful, but with some questions, life with home & family. But early on in the book we get bits of of info about her relationship with her husband that causes her ( consequently us) to question behavior of him; she overlooks the confusion because she loves him.
Very realistic description of her job trying to find & expose Russian cells in the US. Cleveland has experience doing the same work so it’s very real.
In the beginning, Narrator was hard for me to get used to her kind of hush hush voice. It was annoying. But the tale was told from the main person, Vivian’s, standpoint.so it was as if we were in her thoughts. I got used to it. Finally didn’t notice it so much.
All in all a good read. It wasn’t hard to figure out the “bad” guy. But the ending was a surprise.
Very enjoyable. Clean, family oriented storyline, no unnecessary cussing. Family values very strongly portrayed. Nice for a change.

Loved "Fallout" V. I. Warshawski. Never heard narrator before nor read any of Paretsky novels. I'm sold if the others are just as good. Loved the great narration. Easy to follow changes in voices to the character speaking. Enjoyed Pepe & V. I 's relationship.
Great story development. Characters we're believable. Suspenseful. Comical in places. Loved V. I. 's "no one messes with me" attitude yet also her compassion. She was portrayed tough, but real. I'm ready to read another!

Walt, my fav sheriff
Revisado: 11-21-16
I just love this series because of:
Walt doesn't take himself seriously, but is an excellent lawman who not only believes in the letter of the law, but allows a lot of the spirit of the law as part of his job.
Walt's philosophy w/o preaching
Walt's genuine respectful humorous friendship w/ Henry, and his reciprocation back to Walt
Love the loyalty & honor that is Walt
His deep spirituality w/Cheyenne nation as well as his respect for the Cheyenne.
Not crazy about Vic.
Love Ruby-- she's an anchor
All in all a great listen. George Guidel is excellent as the "voice" of Walt and Henry & all the voices.
Makes you giggle, guffaw, tears, indignation on behalf of underdog. By the way, love "Dog".

At first the story moved kind of slow then I realized this book was aimed at younger readers. Then I got acquainted with cute Bowser and his narration. I've had many pets in my lifetime, and I would love to have listened to them ideas. Bowser is warm, innocent, funny.---deeply loyal. Love him. I want one!! 😍
