It was ok
Revisado: 01-04-25
I enjoyed listening to it, but I must say that it didn't sweep me off my feet. I liked Max quite a lot; I liked her well enough. I think my main issue is with the performances. I really didn't like the male voice—it sounded breathy all the time, and all of his sentences ended with an upward tilt that made them almost sound like questions. The female voice was good, and I also liked the way she voiced the male characters. The problem is that too often, she made the women (and Tisanah) sound like baby girls, which irked me. I'll get around to the second book, I think, but certainly not now.

"Featuring mature themes"
Revisado: 11-09-24
I've always had a bit of this idea, but I truly believe we've reached a point where books in general—and Audible in particular—should take a page from AO3 and start using actual tags. At the very least, they've recently come up with the term dark romance (though I must note, this book didn't have that label last year when I bought it. At least, I don’t think it did).
This will be the first and last book of this "genre" I'll ever buy.
You know, "dark themes" don't automatically mean, "he's a crazy f*uck who wants to be both the D and the S in BDSM," right? In this book, she enjoys the ‘S’ in BDSM so much that the first time they have sex (which she tells us is her first time ever), she lets us know she needs to be choked out in order to climax. THANKS I HATE IT.
Now, I'm not here to kink-shame anyone. If people who liked this book enjoyed that, I’m genuinely happy for them! But can we admit this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea? Is it too much to ask to find "dark themes" without having to go through the 1200th broody dominator and the 14000th "submissive girl (BUT ONLY IN BED BECAUSE SHE'S A STRONG, INDEPENDENT WOMAN IN HER DAILY LIFE)"™?
My main issue isn't that these types of books exist—I genuinely want people to read what they enjoy. But... is this all there is out there?
More importantly, must I always go blindly into stories I loathe? Must I always scour the comments, hoping someone will mention how many sex scenes (or minutes, in the audiobook version) I'll have to endure and what kind they are?
Luckily, none of this triggers me; it just deeply bothers me. I feel for people who have real trauma and want to enjoy romance books with mature themes but end up risking a "jack-in-the-box" surprise. Or worse, they’re pushed to stick to the "wholesome" section—which often has heavy religious themes I'd rather avoid as well.
That said, the narrators were excellent, so I might try to get through a few more chapters (skipping the sex scenes) before giving up. I'm at chapter 17 currently, but I don't have high hopes. Honestly, I just feel completely disheartened.

Historia
Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they're right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she's never been more tired in her life. But she knows what she saw: that night, in her hospital room, a woman tried to take her babies and replace them with her own...creatures. Yet when the police arrived, they saw no one. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she's imagining things. A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren's side in a park. But when they're found, something is different about them.

I managed to get to chapter 12. I agree with most of the 1 and 2 stars review so I'm not gonna repeat what they said... my real problem honestly was Patrick and just how awful he is. Forget the ghost, he is the most disturbing part of the book. I felt so much anxiety at the thought of being trapped with children with such an asshole. Give me a scary ghost anytime to that kind of garbage man.
I liked the narrator btw, but there's nothing she could have done to save this story.

Rue Siebert might not have it all, but she has enough: a few friends she can always count on, the financial stability she yearned for as a kid, and a successful career as a biotech engineer at Kline, one of the most promising start-ups in the field of food science. Her world is stable, pleasant, and hard-fought. Until a hostile takeover and its offensively attractive front man threatens to bring it all crumbling down.

Disappointed. DNF
Revisado: 06-14-24
This is the first Ali Hazelwood book I did not finish. I've read/listened to her first two books at least three times each, and I loved them. I loved the chemistry between the two characters, and I really enjoyed the fan fiction tropes as I'm an avid fan fic reader.I didn't particularly like "Love, Theoretically" either, especially for its depiction of asexuality (SHE JUST HAD TO MEET THE RIGHT MAN, YOU GUYS!!), but at least I read it all. I will not finish this one. I don't come to Ali Hazelwood for the smut, and there's just so much of it here (I also hate female sub/male dom dynamics, so that only made it worse for me).The narrators were fine, even if probably not my all-time favorites. I can't say much regarding the plot, as at chapter 13 it's still unraveling (not that I can't guess step-by-step what is going to happen from here to the end of the book).
Let's hope her next book is a hit again.

Historia
When Phoebe, goddess of the moon, is killed by the knights of the sun god, Hyperion, all who follow her are branded heretics. With Phoebe gone, the souls of the dead are no longer ferried to the underworld, and instead linger on as shades who feast on the blood of the living. Raef is a child of the night. He lives in the shadows, on scraps, eking out a meager existence as a thief. But when an ornate box is sequestered in the Temple of Hyperion, the chance of a big score proves too great to resist. What he finds within propels him on an odyssey across the sea and back again.

i had higher hopes
Revisado: 04-12-24
it wasn't bad per se, but I never could get into the characters. i liked seth slightly better then rae, which didn't help much since most of the story focuses on the second one.
The plot WAS good, but if you don't like the characters there isn't much that the plot can do.
[spoiler] the romance was a disappointment as well. idk how people can say there's too much of it. we have the whole first 3/4 of the book focus on rae and kinos just to receive a great trolol ACTUALLY. I would have much preferred of the main focus was on rae and seth who in my opinion had better chemistry [end spoiler].
I was never in love with this author's other works so I believe it's just incompatibility on our parts.

Can I have 20 more books like this please?
Revisado: 11-28-23
Thank the heaven for this book. It was such a breath of fresh hair. I've been looking for so long for a book in which HE for once is the submissive one in bed and finally I stumbled into this book.
It was short, unfortunately, since I could have listened to double that length to Dev and Eliza exploration of each other's bodies and desires, but at least it made for a tight narration.
Pity the other books of this same author don't seem to follow the same pattern of this couple.
The only thing I can hope for is to stumble in another book like this soon enough (and until then I'll have to keep reading M/M romance I guess)

Historia
At work, I’m King of Wall Street. The heaviest hitters in Manhattan come to me to make money. They do whatever I say because I’m always right. I’m shrewd. Exacting. Some say ruthless. At home, I’m a single dad trying to keep his fourteen-year-old daughter a kid for as long as possible. If my daughter does what I say, somewhere there’s a snowball surviving in hell. And nothing I say is ever right. When Harper Jayne starts as a junior researcher at my firm, the barriers between my worlds begin to dissolve. She’s the most infuriating woman I’ve ever worked with.

it's a me problem and I know there are a lot of people out there who like this kind of stories, but at a certain point I felt like I was reading just p0rn with a little bit of story in the middle.
Luckily it was still included in the membership when I listened to it (and honestly I only managed to finish it because I was relegated in bed with a nasty flu).

not a bad listen at all. I had a very boring task to complete on my computer these last two days and this was perfect to keep me company.
not sure about the ghost presence... i either think there should have been a lot more or a lot less.
idk if i would spend a credit on this, but since it was still free when i listened to it it was perfect.
