Historia
After many years working around the world for an international charity in the late 1960s, Eleanor Trewynn has retired to the relative quiet of a small town in Cornwall. But her quiet life is short-lived when, due to her experience, the Commonwealth Relations Office reaches out to her to assist in a secret conference that is to take place in a small hotel outside the historical village of Tintagel. Meanwhile, her niece, Detective Sergeant Megan Pencarrow, is investigating the disappearance of a local solicitor when she is assigned to help provide security.

Downward spiral (spoilers)
Revisado: 09-21-21
4 hrs of filler after MC dies. Way way to much repetition, stats & fighting . Done with the series. Came for the MC’s witty banter, almost nonexistent in this episode. Yes I know it’s LITRPG. But filler is filler you still need progression and not publisher deadlines.

Not a complete Anne of Green Gables series
Revisado: 07-16-21
Was missing Anne of Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside. So a bit disappointed in this. Voices and readings were excellent - especially for a free version.

Agonizingly slow
Revisado: 08-11-18
No MC character development, most of the story is about the supporting characters. I couldn’t even finish it.

Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Something funky here
Revisado: 07-06-18
This written portion of the review in entirely based upon the performance/narration. As some have stated there are two versions of this book one narrated by Patrick Tull the other by Simon Vance. The Simon Vance versions are no longer available on Audible (???). Now that they aren't available everyone is saying the the Tull versions are the way to go, NOT! He is a terrible narrator, dry, monotone, talk about the weather boring. I own both versions, and finally got my wife to listen to a few by Simon Vance. As soon as she got to the Tull versions she couldn't get through them, I warned her in advance too. Audible repackaged the cover art too, once they dropped the Vance versions. So I've got to wonder if the reviews are now padded to sell the Tull versions; not the first or last time Audible/Amazon has done this type of thing. For those who care about your $ carefully listen to the demo before you purchase. I've made many many mistakes of not following this advice myself. Great Narration is what makes audio book worth listening too, don't waste your time or money on the Tull versions.

Main character beyond stupid
Revisado: 10-03-17
Despite all the positive reviews this series is a waste. The main character is completely clueless. He's supposed to be the best of the best, yet time after time makes mistakes that even newbies laugh at. Fantastic narration though.

Very poor narration almost like speech impediment
Revisado: 07-15-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Either learn how to pronounce military terms correctly, or choose a different genre. A vocal coach or editor was seriously needed on piece, it was like Mr. Berry wasn't even trying.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Matthew Berry?
James Patrick Cronin, Luke Daniels, R.C. Bray, Jonathan Davis, Tom Lenno
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Combat Wizard?
none it's unabridged
Any additional comments?
I realize that the more popular narrators cost more, but for audio you get what you pay for. I have enjoyed most of the authors written works to date. The military commentary and southwest references (Ft Bliss/El Paso, and New Mexico) are spot on.
