A Truly Engrossing Adventure Into The Cosmos
Revisado: 10-20-17
Scott Kelly's intimate portrait of a long-lived and fascinating life of discovery through his days as a Navy aviator and NASA astronaut lends itself to fascinating stories. The way the book flows by interweaving stories of his past with the main star story of the book, being his year long stint at The ISS, is perfection. Everything from the mundane details of a routine repair on The ISS to space walks to piloting the space shuttle to looking for his friend's remains in the wreckage of The Columbia disaster are here in a wonderfully entertaining presentation. This book is honest, full of heart, and just a great journey taken with the author as he recounts a life filled with adventures taken by few.
I only docked it one star on the performance as author's tone is somewhat monotonous but it should in no way keep you from enjoying the story. It adds much to the story hearing the author tell HIS OWN story and I appreciate that in a memoir more than a polished audio book reader.
What an incredible journey this audio book takes you on! Close your eyes and travel into a frontier not yet conquered but well explored by Scott Kelly.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

An exhaustive research and documentation of one of the most fascinating criminal cases in recent history that actually leaves a gray area talking point to the weight of the crime(s). This also plays out as one of the best cat and mouse chase thrillers I've ever heard. Simply fascinating and leaves you wanting more.

Everyone wants to escape their boring, stagnant lives full of inertia and regret. But so few people actually have the bravery to run - run away from everything and selflessly seek out personal fulfillment on the other side of the world where they don’t understand anything and won’t be expected to. The world is full of cowards. Tim Anderson was pushing 30 and working a string of dead-end jobs when he made the spontaneous decision to pack his bags and move to Japan.

A perfect portrait of Tokyo that's insanely funny
Revisado: 09-06-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! The portrayal of my favorite country / city is spot on. For those that haven't visited Tokyo/Japan, the author does a great job at explaining everything that's culturally odd, endearing, and wonderful. It's also one of the funniest books I've listened to and the narrator completely nails it.
Any additional comments?
The best memoir about Japan / Tokyo I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Smartly written and, easily, one of the best narration jobs I've ever come across on Audible.

In Full Upright and Locked Position, former FAA chief counsel and senior aviation policy official Mark Gerchick unravels the unseen forces and little-known facts that have reshaped our air travel experience since September 11, 2001. With wry humor and unique insight, Gerchick takes us past the jargon, technicalities, and all-is-well platitudes to expose the new normal of air travel: from the packed planes and myriad hassles of everyday flying to the alchemy of air fares, the airlines' endless nickel-and-diming, and the elusive hope of escape from steerage.

This presents a good amount of detail of how air travel got to where it is today and how air travel started, FINALLY, making a profit. Some facts the author has are incorrect and fail to the true air travel pro ears but it still gets an A grade in factual content. If you travel regularly, this is a must-read/listen. Never boring or short on information. Solid all around.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

This is one of the most absorbing and enthralling audiobooks you will ever have the pleasure of listening to. I was going to pass it over since it's a movie and I wasn't interested; however, the insane amount of positive reviews this has grabbed made me think twice. I'm not even into sci-fi but this played out more like a non-fiction and that's my main listening material. This was absolutely perfect from start to finish. It has it all. A must have audiobook!

Entertainment Weekly calls acclaimed author and essayist J. Maarten Troost a "funny, candid, and down-to-earth travel companion". Both witty and poignant, Headhunters on My Doorstep follows Troost as he retraces Robert Louis Stevenson’s path through the South Pacific. Somewhere between AA meetings in Tahiti and discovering how the Island of Merrymaking got its name, Troost reconnects with himself, his family, and the beauty of life.

My Favorite Travel Author Gets Personal
Revisado: 04-14-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Headhunters on My Doorstep to be better than the print version?
Yes. Vance and Troost are and incredible match.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The one writing it of course
Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Top notch as usual. One of the best readers in the world.
Any additional comments?
Some people complain about Troost getting personal about his struggles past and present while on this travel journey and, I would think, have a sadistic side in enjoying the humor in his past explorations of places along with copious amounts of intoxicants. Therefore, you'll see some negative reviews on this one as it strays just a tad from his normal outings. However, nothing is lost to me in this recount. His historical perceptive and information stays true and loose as usual which makes it all more accessible versus being like textbook material. I can't get enough from Troost and am so upset that his journey through India book got canned. This book loses some entertainment value versus is other ones as it's a bit more serious than the others but, to me, it makes it only a tad less enjoyable than all his others. The bar has always been set high with Troost, though. It remains so here but the tone is only slightly different. I still laughed, learned, and thoroughly enjoyed and you will too.

Historia
Islands, Oceans, and Dreams is a true story of a man who, at the age of 33, began dreaming of voyaging with his wife to the South Pacific. He wasn't an adventurer or daring by nature, but he bought a boat and began learning the ways of the sea. Twenty years later, racked with the pain of divorce and still aching to live out his dream, he set off alone for Tahiti. After reaching French Polynesia, he continued cruising for seven years and wound up solo sailing around the world. Islands, Oceans, and Dreams takes the listener on that voyage.

Great even those who've never been on a sailboat
Revisado: 01-13-15
If you could sum up Islands, Oceans, and Dreams in three words, what would they be?
Great insight into risk, adventure, cultures, dreams, technical info on sailing, and what the world has to offer if you have the guts to go out and take it on in a fashion that would seem insane to most.
What did you like best about this story?
It's amazing amount of information. At first listen, I thought I would return it as many of the seamanship terms were out of my reach and I thought it may be only for those that have been on a sailboat / yacht. I have not been. I gave it some time and discovered that it was far less technical and filled with amazing adventures and experiences one man endured over SEVEN years on his own solo adventure around the world. The people he met, the things he saw, the experiences he had (both great and horribly challenging) were all given in great and entertaining detail. It has me thinking of learning to sail one day and possible give up land life and live truly free as this man did once I hit the wall in my 50's.
What does Andrew Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Solid narration. Simply solid. Nothing spectacular but absolutely solid.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me consider what I am doing with my life. I've been an avid world traveler by air for many years but nothing to this extreme. This kind of life is fascinating and had me questioning what I might do with the remainder of my life. Should I take such a risk / take on something so out of my norm in order to experience things 99.9% of the world's population have not done? It does lead to dreams of what you might do with your life / what you might be willing to take on in order to add that final exclamation point to your life's story.
Any additional comments?
Do not be afraid to listen to this is you know nothing about sailing. I don't and didn't. The adventure herein is fascinating and makes you question what you may be capable of as far as risk taking and the human endeavor of the one life we are all given. I did find myself looking up some sailing terms and following along a bit on google maps during this great 19+ hour journey. It was just an absolutely wonderful journey to take via audio.

Beginning with his final departure from Neverland, Untouchable takes listeners through Jackson's final four years, as he shuttled from California to the Middle East, Ireland, Asia, the East Coast, and Las Vegas, planning to recapture his wealth and reputation with a comeback album and a series of 50 mega-concerts, for which he was rehearsing until the day before his death. Sullivan has never-before-reported information about Jackson's business dealings and the pedophilia allegations that irreparably marked his reputation, and he had exclusive access to inner-circle figures.

THE BEST and absolute DEFINITIVE biopic of MJ!
Revisado: 06-20-14
Where does Untouchable rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I love bios and memoirs especially of fascinating characters. There is no disputing that Michael Jackson was and is one of the most polarizing and fascinating characters to grace the world stage. Therefore, I would rank this bio in my top 3 I've ever listened to in my life.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Untouchable?
The amount of research that went into this bio must have been an insanely staggering task. This has to be one of the most complicated studies of any human being as Michael and his life story is one of the most complicated stories of our time. Therefore, the most memorable thing about this listen was the absolute shocking amount of information contained within.
What does Mel Foster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Reading this book, especially much of the court and legal dramas, could get quite dry. I wouldn't want to read this book. No way.
Any additional comments?
This is, no doubt, THE bio if you are interested in Michael Jackson. It remains objective and strictly sticks to the facts. It does not paint Michael in a negative light. It points out his extreme eccentric nature, flaws, his positives, and everything else in between that made him such an amazing figure in American history. What struck me and disgusted me was the extremely disgusting and dysfunctional nature of his ENTIRE family. The entire Jackson clan, with the exception of his children and his Mother Katherine, are the epitome of evil. And, of course, there were a slew of other characters that would weasel their way into Michael's life whom were deplorable souls destined for karmic h*ll fire for how they sought to take advantage of him as a, virtual, ATM machine. This book has it all. 5 Stars / Excellent. I only took one star off for the narration as much of it gets a bit monotone but I don't see any other way the reader would have communicated such an ENOURMOUS amount of information any other way. The narrator does do a good job of changing his voice to highlight dialogue from the massive cast of characters he has to deal with within this book but some may find it doesn't have enough character. I found it to be easy to listen to and would not let it turn you away from the listen. Worth every penny / credit.

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids waiting at home and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king, here, in Jordan Belfort's own words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called the Wolf of Wall Street.

Interesting story of extraordinary life - Too long
Revisado: 03-27-14
What made the experience of listening to The Wolf of Wall Street (Movie Tie-in Edition) the most enjoyable?
The story itself is interesting. I love non-fiction about the lives of extraordinary / unique people living "off the wall" lives that go against the grain of society's normal ho-hum boxed-in existence. Belfort's story fits squarely into what I consider insightful fun. It's educational, entertaining, downright uniquely insane, and TRUE.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wolf of Wall Street (Movie Tie-in Edition)?
The tales of debauchery and shady business practices on an extreme level.
What about Eric Meyers’s performance did you like?
Very solid narration but nothing to write home about. I've heard better but I've heard more that are FAR worse. I had no issue with the narration at all. Well done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Heck, no. It's too long and my only negative comment on the title. There are simply too many details strung out into these unnecessary bouts of information and writing.
Any additional comments?
The book is too long and doesn't even cover the entire Belfort story. You have to get another insanely long audiobook called, "Catching the Wolf of Wall Street" in order to get his full story. The drawn out details of certain events slow the pace of the story to an almost unbearable crawl at times. I would recommend this title and it's next book that goes with it. If you aren't going to listen to "Catching The Wolf of Wall Street," you are cheated out of the entire story that you just spent an INSANE amount of hours listening to. To complete the entire story with the two books, you may find yourself losing interest over time which is not good. I know I did. I haven't finished the last book as I just became burnt out on the length and yammering about the same details for hours on end. You certainly will get your money's worth for how long the title is which is nice. It's a great all-around story that I can highly recommend but it's not going to be a good experience for short attention spans.
