First of - this is not a young adult book, no matter the publishers branding. Content warnings include: graphic torture and murder of infants, children and adults, rape, genocide. There are scenes from this book I can't shake days after, and while I am very glad I read it, I will not reread it, even if I reread other books in this series. It starts bleak and ends bleaker. As expected a lot of long-time characters die (often tortured to death), but this time the gruesome deaths include some 1st person POV characters.
Brown's series is about human monsters (and some heroes), and in this second trilogy we follow the creation of some monsters in the younger generation, and the corruption of some heroes into monsters in the older generation.

this is the tale of the aftermath of a massacre, and in this fantastical world, the aftermath is tangible and deadly. they call it grief, and it lies all over the city. ghosts haunt the city as the living try to make sense of the world after the religiously motivated massacre. we get to follow two young men, seemingly very different at first, as they try to figure out how to keep faith when everything they know is shown to be lies.. if you like bromance, romance, torn loyalties, questions of faith and really twisty plots, this is for you!

This is one of my favorite fantasy books because of the daring creativity of the world and the consistent believability of the so very different protagonists.
The narrator does a great job in getting the laconic (or wished-for laconic) voice of young Ryo who so very much wants to be unmoved by the world. it's a good choice to let his voice be so even, only to sometimes change when his composure is cracked - Roy's emotions are instead so clearly expressed in the beautiful poetic yet extremely precise, language Neumeier gives him.
