Usually the narrator is good but
Revisado: 08-16-24
Good story but the narrator kept changing some character voices and should have found out the correct pronunciation for real towns mentioned in the story.

Fantastic Narration & Story
Revisado: 12-09-23
Loved listening to the combined narration of those voices that have become synonymous with Harry & Mickey. Love Michael Connelly books and this one is truly a gem.

Historia
Populated with colorful, richly drawn characters, Margaret Maron's latest novel captures the flavor of life in rural North Carolina. Arriving in Carteret County, Judge Deborah Knott finds herself in the thick of battles between sport and commercial fishermen and between old and new money. She discovers the body of Andy Bynum, a retired waterman respected by all. With no obvious suspects in the murder, Deborah must find the killer in a place where people shoot at loons, sea turtles, and their neighbors.

So so narration
Revisado: 10-02-23
The narrator really needs to check on pronunciation of real places. As a long time North Carolina resident, I cringed at the number of mispronunciations while listening to this otherwise really good book.

Another Wonderful Karen White novel
Revisado: 06-12-18
Loved everything about this new, well-written, intricately woven Karen White novel. My only complaint about the audiobook concerns the narrator for the character of Ivy--I felt that she read the part as if Ivy were 80+ years old instead of in her late 50's. In my opinion, it would have made more sense for that narrator to be Ceecee's voice since she was, indeed, almost 80. Although I found that one element to be rather annoying, I would give the book, itself, 5+ stars.

Decades later, no one has been charged with the murder, but the aggrieved inhabitants of West Cork are convinced they know who did it - and he still lives among them.

Just an okay story
Revisado: 03-11-18
I lost interest in and concern for both the characters and the storyline long before this audio production finally concluded. I only prodded on in listening in hopes that the story would get better—unfortunately it didn’t. Although the narrators were pretty good, they weren’t enough to rate this story any higher than just okay.

A Great Who Dunit!
Revisado: 02-01-18
Well written. There were enough varied suspects and twists & turns throughout the storyline to keep me guessing as to who dunit almost to the point when the villain was revealed.

Another well-read novel
Revisado: 08-20-12
What made the experience of listening to House Rules the most enjoyable?
The various readers took on the personalities of their characters so smoothly. They gave each character a "flesh and blood" identity.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I was not totally surprised by the ending. Jacob had made several statements that suggested the actual outcome. In addition, Theo's rendition of what he had experienced at the house set the stage so the outcome should not have been a complete surprise. I felt the ending was a bit of a letdown based on the buildup throughout the story line.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Through the readers, I felt each character come to life as "flesh and blood" individuals with distinct personalities.
Who was the most memorable character of House Rules and why?
To me, Theo was the most memorable character because I felt he had sacrificed a significant amount of his potential "normal" life as a kid and a teen because of his mother's obsessive care of Jacob. His way of compensating for that sacrifice was breaking into homes that were like what he wished his home was. Had he not yearned for "normalcy" in his life and therefore not broken into the home where Jess was, the trauma that the characters endured through her death and Jacob's trial could have been prevented.
