Historia
Set before and during the Great War, Birdsong captures the drama of that era on both a national and a personal scale. It is the story of Stephen, a young Englishman, who arrives in Amiens in 1910. His life goes through a series of traumatic experiences, from the clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives to the unprecedented experience of the war itself.

The BEST
Revisado: 11-23-22
I read the novel years ago and loved it. The audible version was at least as wonderful. The story was clearly the same; the narration was outstanding. So glad I returned to the story a second time.

Great Book but….
Revisado: 04-03-22
Terrific book. Thorough, well-researched, and objective. An extremely full picture of Coach K and his career. As a Duke grad, I’ve long-respected Krzyzewski, largely because his players love him so much and he appears to return that love in kind…a big deal to me. As a former player, coach and urban teacher, high school principal and superintendent, I’m far less enamored by the way Coach K frequently demeaned his players in front of one another and in front of the public, using language and behavior that any public school employee would be fired for on the spot. Maybe a small thing in the larger scheme, but a very big deal to me as I worked to build the esteem and confidence of countless highly-challenged, urban kids. One more note: buyer beware. The narrator has a terrific voice and style, but you will continually cringe while he inexplicably and inexcusably butchers countless names of players and coaches alike. Buy the book in any case. You won’t regret it.

Not to be missed.

I live in Boston but have never been a Patriot fan, having grown up in Detroit. This story still fascinated me as I came to know Brady and Belichick better. Simple men with flaming needs and ambition. In addition, Richard Poe’s narration is nothing less than excellent. Perfect voice. Pitch perfect presentation.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

A wonderful surprise.
Revisado: 10-15-19
I loved this book, including Joe Morton’s narration. I’ve read much of Mr. Coates work and was greatly surprised to find that his fiction surpassed his essays and memoir. Among the many slave narratives and stories I’ve read, The Water Dancer is uniquely moving. Read it. Listen to it.
