Historia
A wide-ranging cultural and political history that will forever redefine a misunderstood decade, Stayin' Alive is prize-winning historian Jefferson Cowie's remarkable account of how working-class America hit the rocks in the political and economic upheavals of the 1970s. In this edgy and incisive book, Cowie, with "an ear for the power and poetry of vernacular speech" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), reveals America's fascinating path from rising incomes and optimism of the New Deal to the widening economic inequalities and dampened expectations of the present.

Couldn’t get past “rank and file”
Revisado: 10-13-21
The book may have had good content, but I really could not get into it. The overuse of the expression “rank and file” was so distracting. Listening to the book became only an anxious anticipation of the next time “rank and file” would be used and I couldn’t pay attention to the content. Without a better editor, unfortunately this book has been reduced to an educational drinking game. I’m sorry I couldn’t get past that.

No what I thought
Revisado: 06-19-21
The author’s name sold me…I thought this was written by famed mycologist Paul Stamet’s relation. Clearly no.
Do you know when you are assembling a grill or furniture and the directions have clearly been translated by someone who’s first language is not the ones they are writing in? This book reads like that. I could not get through it.
There are many, many engaging mushroom/fungi books out there well worth a credit and your time. Don’t waste a credit on this one.

Disappointed and bland-checks no boxes
Revisado: 03-17-21
This is essentially a personal journal, with all of the juicy parts removed. Her life is not interesting enough to pepper the book with interesting anecdotes, nor is it universal enough to speak to me. The themes are broad, but not broad enough to be a ubiquitous experience, and not narrow enough to be an interesting study...if you have a strong sense of self you will find nothing helpful in this book and it is not a unique enough story to stay interested, entertained, and engaged.
The author is a therapist, and every time she mentions it, I am surprised at how blind she is to the power she gives the male relationships in her life-she struggles not in a way like “This is a problem we can all relate to,” or “I realize this is particular struggle for me” but it is just so bland. The male/female power and choice dynamic is a common theme in most memoirs written by female “old time” hippies. This is a genre I love and relisten to, even though this is not a personal struggle I relate to on a first-hand basis. I was hoping this would be a similar journey of someone closer my contemporary. Nope.
I got 2/3 of the way through it and couldn’t even bring myself to finish the less than 4 hour book. I have been an audible member since 2012, buy tons of extra credits, listen and relisten constantly, and recently became a premium plus member. I think this is only the 3rd book I have returned out of hundreds and I wanted to save others the trouble. No judgment, but if you find yourself struggling with the influence of a man on your self, you may connect with the author and enjoy the book much more than I did-just don’t expect any answers as you and the author will just floundering through together.

Historia
During the 1940s, Britain suffered a national catastrophe that would become known as The Great Tribulation by its survivors. The remnant of His Majesty’s Government formed a department known as The Ministry of Survivors; the mandate of this office was to help, guide, and inform the public through the anarchy around them. They produced and issued a handbook known as The Citizen Survivor’s Guidebook. This is an audiobook of a surviving copy of the 2nd edition of The Citizen Survivor’s Guidebook.

Not at all what I thought
Revisado: 05-04-20
I had recently finished Martin Sheen’s narration of “The Home Front,” and wanted another book about WWII.
This wasn’t it.
I assumed it was literally a reading of how to plant a victory garden and how to draw your seams on for fake nylon stockings and tips on how to cover your windows for air raid drills or something....Nope. It’s fictional, and seems like it is an appendix to a novel or a series or something...I wish it had said that clearly in the description. The information is out there, (I found it after the fact) but if you aren’t familiar with the author, how are you supposed to know? The title seems like nonfiction to me, and there is no indication of the series it might belong to in the description. It was a waste of my personal time to read a fake how-to book with no factual information and little plot, but if it is actually an off branch of a series I had been into and read it is a cool concept for a short little book to round out the setting. . If it is a stand alone book it doesn’t make sense. It is written and read like a how-to book with step by steps, but more casual and interjected with very sexist fake 1940’s radio shorts.
Fair warning for anyone who, like me, was looking for some first hand history-move on this is not the book for you.
