You Never Can Tell was originally born out of a bet that Shaw couldn't write a "seaside comedy" (a popular theatrical genre at that time). The result is perhaps the most surprising of Shaw's plays, complete with marital mayhem, tangled romance, and even doubtful dentistry. Despite the play's lighthearted tone, it's really another of Shaw's brilliantly observed social treatises, this time in the guise of a light comedy.

I bought this because I love James' Callis' voice.
The icing on this cake is it's a George Bernard Shaw play.
As a little girl, I was fascinated with My Fair Lady, never knowing anything about Shaw.
He'd have much to say on love and family in this day. :)
The cast is delightfully dynamic. I'd often have to remind myself this was a play. They seem to have much affection for each other. Susan Sutherland is a Goddess. They all have great chemistry. Gloria and Mr. Valentine are enchanting and adorable. They are the reason I listen over and over. James delivers Shaw's talking in circle lines of longing and how can you not fall in love with Mr. Valentine? Their scenes totally tickle. Shaw can write love at first sight like it happened to him often in life which is probably why. I don't really know what I'm talking about.
When I die I hope I meet Shaw out there where the spacey balconies overlook the cosmic English seaside divine comedy.
In the final analysis, this is very funny, still, more than 126 years later.
It's great fun and lightens the heart after a visit with a five shilling dentist.

What made the experience of listening to After Dark the most enjoyable?
Annie Dalton is a genius!This download is one of my all time favorite things to do..listen...It is simply,.... the most extraordinary children's story I've ever experienced! Overflowing with vivid images, fragrances in words and a story line that twists and turns the listener dizzily around into fields of dreams of dark and light, day and night.Packed with unique, amusing dreamy characters that shoot straight out of the speakers, breaking a 4th wall..in a foggy haze. I have listened to this tale at least a dozen times, and each time I do, I notice things I did not notice before. The listener falls deeper into the book each time it's experienced..., my mind was a bit blown away by a swirly hot air balloon the first time I listened...but as time went on, the tale kept getting bigger AND "nearer, every second." My love of good reading is, well, extreme, which brings us to the narrator James Callis.Talk about "EAR CANDY!" ...James Callis as an extremely talented narrator with a voice that morphs like the spiraling dream fields do, Annie found the absolutely perfect voice for her other worldly tale, For me, James' voice is; dreamy, funny, child like, and sometimes hypnotically sexy.... a voice that often tickles my ears and back of neck... literally. So yea, even though we are grown ups, doesn't mean we shouldn't indulge in a childhood ritual...a Bedtime story. I find myself putting this on again and again.... to escape to my own grown up fairy tale of feeling childhood wonder again, well at least for three hours or so. Annie Dalton is brilliant...James Callis is brilliant....and this work of word art would make a beautiful other worldly film, if not a magical comic book! The endless images and colors in the listeners mind are breath taking.Highly recommend!xo (Ironically, I suffer from nightmares, this tale helps me deal with that)

What does James Callis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He goes in and out of characters in a instant and does it so smoothly, you sometimes forget where you are. Amazing talent!
