It seems they've made it in the white world. However, young Maddie, one of the only Black children in town, bears the brunt of the racism and the invisible barriers her family's money, education, and determination can't free her from.

Historia
Founded in the late 1800s by the son of Frederick Douglass, Highland Beach along the Chesapeake Bay is the oldest Black resort community in America. Inside this proud and secluded beach community of about 100 private homes is Olivia Jones’s legacy. But Oliva’s legacy comes with thorns—intertwined are secrets of her aunt’s death; a controlling grandmother who is determined to crush anyone or anything that will interfere with her son’s political career; and a father who wants to rebuild the family he rejected decades ago.

So many emotions!
Revisado: 09-10-24
I loved this book. The entire series was beautifully written. I feel I could relate to all the characters in this story. Though, I thought for sure Olivia was pregnant since she did get sick. I can’t wait to visit Highland Beach on our next weekend getaway.

Historia
Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date. But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.

This was such a beautiful story. Listening to Kitt’s smooth sultry voice was icing on the cake. This story was so relatable for me. My mom was born in the south and I was raised in CA. Thank you Kitt for sharing an important part of your life with me.

This book is so inspirational! I felt like I’ve know Elaine and her parents all my life. I felt an instant connection since we are both from Cali. During the entire book, it seems like I was on a women’s empowerment retreat! Definitely recommend this book. I’ve added this to my high school daughter’s summer reading. Thank you for sharing your story Elaine. And the interview with the parents was the Cherry on top!

Historia
Confessions of a Token Black Girl is a snappy comedic tale framing Danielle's first-hand experiences in Wisconsin and other places as the perpetual "token Black girl", fraught with dark moments and hate crimes. It's a coming-of-age-story but instead of finding herself during a road trip, Danielle found herself through the effects of racism. This book humorously chronicles Danielle's quest for understanding what Black identity means to her - instead of what it means to everyone else.

Many of these experiences I felt as a child growing up in CA. Living in WI as an adult having to prove myself, wanting to be looked at beyond my skin in the workplace was challenging as well. The way foreigners see us, based on what is seen on TV. I really enjoyed this book. I hope to find more reads from this author.

Historia
Barbara Chase-Riboud is an award-winning poet, novelist, scholar, and sculptor. Hottentot Venus, a 2004 BCALA Literary Award winner, focuses on Sarah Blaartman, an African tribewoman who, because of her prominent sexual characteristics, was paraded as a freak before audiences in England and Paris. This mesmerizing novel reflects the racism and cruelty of turn-of-the-century Eurocentric culture, but it also reveals Sarah's remarkable strength of spirit.
