Historia
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

Interesting story but a bit too long.
Revisado: 12-22-21
The story is interesting, for the most part, but did have many characters and took a long time to solve the question of who was guilty of the murders. It lost my interest at times and I quit listening and went on to other audiobooks. I did go back to this book and did finish listening. Fewer superfluous details would have helped keep the story moving towards its proper conclusion. I plan to try other books by this author and this performer.

The narrator is annoying.
Revisado: 04-10-20
I am very fond of Jack London's novels and short stories. This would have been a great listen except for the odd way the performer stopped and started (or paused) at inappropriate places in the sentences. I found this to be annoying and it distracted me from being able to following the thread of the narration.

I think this is a reworke story from another novel
Revisado: 02-02-19
Over the years I have read many of William Johnstone's western novels. Up until June 2015, I bought a lot of the paperback novels. I have always found them to be simple, straight forward easy to read novels. Relaxing and not at all stressful. I am very sure I was never exposed to the character, Joe Buckhorn before this. I would remember the character because there are things about him that annoy me.
Unfortunately, as I read and listen to this "Paid in Blood" story I keep getting the feeling that I have read this story before, with different names but the same actions and settings. And as the story unfolds, I feel I know what is going to happen or I am not surprised be the events as they unfold.
I suppose I could have read this book at some time. But I just do not think so. William and J.A. Johnstone have written and published an vast number of books with a multitude of "hero" characters. I wonder if they could have messed up and reused a plot from a different story. Or maybe I somehow managed to read this "Paid in Blood" years ago and forgot the title and the main character in the story, but recall the actions and the descriptions of the places where these actions take place. It is somewhat disconcerting and it interfered with my enjoyment of this book.

An Australian classic, the disappearance of three girls and a schoolteacher at Hanging Rock has captivated and intrigued audiences for generations. A REAL "PICNIC" OF AN AUDIOBOOK
Revisado: 09-03-18
Picnic at Hanging Rock is an enjoyable yet disturbing novel. The writing is clear and entertaining, the story easy to follow, the descriptions of characters and settings detailed enough to enhance the readers' enjoyment of the novel. The mystery builds as the story continues. Yet the novel ends without a resolution, leaving readers to draw their own conclusions or, like the characters in the novel, to wander aimlessly among the crags of Hanging Rock.

Historia
Many people dream of escaping modern life, but most will never act on it. This is the remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his own.

I also want to be a hermit.
Revisado: 07-07-18
I only bought this audio book because I have been very interested in living the last years of my life as a hermit. I thought there might be information on some of the difficulties and pitfalls of this lifestyle.
Much to my surprise, I could not stop listening once I started. This is a very interesting account of how one man lived alone for many years and the ingenious things he came up with in order to live his life comfortably, away from other people. The story of his final capture is fascinating (he became a lawbreaker after a while, in order to survive).
The circumstances around the location, time period and setting of the story are not what I expected. This made the events even more intriguing. The audible book will probably NOT keep most people awake at night. But it is an interesting study of how one individual dealt with his emotional issues and the story has relevance for PTSD sufferers and those engaged in trying to help them adjust to today's world.

Audible version is better than reading the book.
Revisado: 06-20-18
Many years ago, I read the whole Sackett series from paperbacks..Being dyslexic, each novel took me a long time to read. The Audible books allow me to "read" each novel again and in less time. The performer does a good job of using his voice inflections and pacing to enhance the story and to keep it moving, thus holding.my interest.
