Well researched historical novel - beautifully written

"Fallen woman" pretends to be a boy to become an apprentice to a Scottish exiled portrait artist. Creative story, multiple plot layers, very sophisticated discussion of slavery and roles of women in pre-revolution Boston. There is even a murder mystery embedded. Surprisingly sexually explicit at times, all with good taste and believable. Semi-epistolary novel. Great Summer read.
