Historia
"The horror on the train, great though it may turn out to be, will not compare with the horror that exists here, in this house." On Christmas Eve, heavy snowfall brings a train to a halt near the village of Hemmersby. Several passengers take shelter in a deserted country house, where the fire has been lit and the table laid for tea - but no one is at home. Trapped together for Christmas, the passengers are seeking to unravel the secrets of the empty house when a murderer strikes in their midst.

Historia
The snow is thick, the phone line is down, and no one is getting in or out of Warbeck Hall. All is set for a lovely Christmas, with friends and family gathered round the fire, except as the bells chime midnight, a murder is committed. But who is responsible? The scorned young lover? The lord's passed-over cousin? The social-climbing politician's wife? The Czech history professor? The obsequious butler? And perhaps the real question is: Can they survive long enough to find out?

Historia
In the late seventies an extraordinary document came to light which for fifty years had been held on deposit by the bankers of the deceased John Herbert Watson MD - better known to devotees of Conan Doyle as Dr Watson. A continuous narrative in the doctor’s own hand, the story opens in the East End of London in 1888. Three women have been savagely murdered by Jack the Ripper.

I really hated this
Revisado: 06-20-21
it was a well-to-do story but there are certain icons you just shouldn't mess with & Sherlick is one of them. the sherlock vs. Jack the Ripper has been done. this adds nothing to that and detracts a great deal from the Canon. my advice, dont read it. you we don't be able to get evil images out of your mind and the great Sherlockian treasure will be tarnished.
really.
if u love Sherlock, DON'T read thisbook!

Unexpected pleasure
Revisado: 11-19-19
I've not read this author, had no expectations, but was eng as God by the story, which, despite its calm narration, I suspect will haunt me.

Historia
The House-Surgeon is a strange tale about a haunted house. Not that there is an actual ghost in evidence. Indeed, nobody has ever died in the house since it was originally built. But a strange all-pervading depression haunts the place intermittently which overwhelms its occupants. When the current owner of the house tells the strange tale of the house to a fellow passenger, Mr. Perseus, on a trans-Atlantic steamer, he invites him down to the house to experience the horrible phenomenon himself.

Narrator absolutely Awful!
Revisado: 11-18-19
Hard to tell how good the story is because the narrator is so, so bad. Ms. Dodson has ruined a number of old stories for me. Unfortunately, I haven't found them in audio elsewhere. if you're a die-hard Kipling fan, as I am, try Kindle or hard copy.

Historia
The Addictive Brain is a fair and balanced investigation of addiction, backed by hard science and behavioral science. Most of us have probably seen the old antidrug commercial in which an actor compares your brain on drugs to an egg sizzling in a hot frying pan. That's a powerful image, but it doesn't tell us what actually happens when drugs enter your body and interact with neurochemical processes.

I did not want to listen to these lectures
Revisado: 01-07-17
Because I didn't want to give up drinking. But it did a great job of explaining the neurological reasons for all kinds of addictions. I've heard about the alcoholic gene since childhood from my worried mother. but the professor's presentation is clear, fascinating and totally nonjudgmental. He has an engaging personality and obvious curiosity that make complex science digestible. If you are trying to quit anything, listen to this. Let your brain help you heal your brain.
