Sad but lovely
Revisado: 06-02-22
In the beginning, I found it hard to like, much less sympathize with the main characters. They seemed shallow, unhappy and unappealing. As the book progressed, they became more appealing. The ending wrapped everything nicely. It’s a good “summer” read, not terribly deep, but entertaining.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

That said. . . . The book was entertaining. The age of the main character throughout was a stretch, 9 years old and skipping Chapel . . . . 19 and playing the best of the Soviet Union? I thought one had to be 21 to purchase alcohol, but I could be mistaken. The book left me wondering what Beth did with the rest of her life, . . . But maybe that was the point. What do we do, with the next 40 years?8

I wasn’t familiar with this author, so l gave the detective series set in England (of course) a try. It was fine, kept my interest. . . . But nothing special. Watch for a sale.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Learned a lot.
Revisado: 09-08-15
Would you try another book from Hampton Sides and/or Arthur Morey?
Probably. This subject was unusual, and happened during a decade I knew little about.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Rather sad.
What about Arthur Morey’s performance did you like?
His voice and tempo were easy to follow.
Did In the Kingdom of Ice inspire you to do anything?
Yes. I told several friends about the various theories concerning the artic ocean and the NorthPole.

Something light and fun
Revisado: 09-08-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'd recommend this book as "beach reading". A great little paperback summer read.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I loved the ending. . . Even though things were "tied up" in Les's family a little too neatly for me.
What didn’t you like about Robin Miles’s performance?
That accent! Has she really never visited South Carolina? TOO heavy. Les sounded like an idiot for half the book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not in one sitting, but over a long weekend. I liked the length.

Historia
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

I was searching for a series similar to R. R. Martin, or Ken Follet. . . . .Clare has a long way to go to join that crowd.

Historia
The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire that stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Historia
A popular question in philosophy is "How do I know I exist?" That seems really boring, though. How about, "How can I use logic to get over my ex?" If you really love wisdom, you love it in all situations - you don't need to be spoon fed unsolved problems in philosophy, because you're already analyzing the US Weekly you’re reading or your kinda significant other. Sarah Heuer and Chrissy Stockton are writers living in Minneapolis who are determined to do something more interesting with their philosophy degrees than talk about dead white guys.

Revisado: 03-11-14
Would you try another book from Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer and/or Theresa McCarthy?
Never
What could Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Cleaned up their childish vulgar language.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Theresa McCarthy?
Probably anyone without her accent.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Rage, at myself for being suckered into purchasing something on "special" from Audible.
Any additional comments?
It doesn't warrant any more of my time. "Delete"
